We are seeking a dedicated and safety-focused Cyanide Champion to lead cyanide management best practices, strengthen operational compliance, and support safe and efficient gold processing operations. This role is critical to maintaining world-class safety standards and ensuring compliance with international cyanide management requirements.

Position Summary

The Cyanide Champion will provide technical oversight, training, and operational support for cyanide handling, storage, mixing, and usage within the processing plant. The successful candidate will promote safe work practices, monitor compliance with international and national standards, and work closely with operational teams to ensure effective cyanide management across the processing facility.

Key Responsibilities

Cyanide Management and Operational Support

  • Monitor cyanide handling, storage, sparging, mixing, and distribution activities to ensure safe and efficient operations.
  • Promote best practices for cyanide management across the processing plant.
  • Support operational teams in maintaining safe cyanide handling procedures and responding to operational challenges.
  • Monitor plant performance indicators related to cyanide management and recommend improvement initiatives.

Safety, Compliance and Risk Management

  • Ensure compliance with the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI Cyanide Code) and all applicable company standards.
  • Support the implementation and maintenance of cyanide management systems and certification requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with the Minerals and Mining (Health, Safety and Technical) Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2182) and other applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Identify cyanide-related hazards, conduct risk assessments, and recommend appropriate control measures.
  • Participate in emergency preparedness activities and support cyanide incident response planning.

Training and Capability Development

  • Coordinate and deliver training programmes on cyanide handling, storage, transportation, emergency response, and safe work practices.
  • Assess training effectiveness and promote continuous learning across plant operations.
  • Coach and mentor employees to strengthen cyanide awareness and operational competence.

Process Improvement and Performance Monitoring

  • Monitor processing plant key performance indicators (KPIs) related to cyanide use and operational efficiency.
  • Analyse operational data and recommend improvements that enhance safety, compliance, and process performance.
  • Prepare technical reports, training records, and compliance documentation as required.

Collaboration and Continuous Improvement

  • Work closely with Metallurgy, Processing, Safety, Environmental, Maintenance, and Operational teams to support safe and efficient plant performance.
  • Participate in audits, inspections, and continuous improvement initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Metallurgical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Minerals Engineering, Materials Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Trainer certification in cyanide handling is an advantage.
  • Basic First Aid certification is an advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) years’ experience in metallurgy within a gold processing plant.
  • Practical experience with cyanide sparging, mixing, storage, and associated processing plant operations.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating and delivering technical training within a gold processing environment.
  • Experience supporting operational safety and regulatory compliance in mineral processing is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of the International Cyanide Management Code (ICMI Cyanide Code) and certification requirements.
  • Sound understanding of metallurgical unit processes used in gold processing.
  • Knowledge of the Minerals and Mining (Health, Safety and Technical) Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2182) relating to cyanide use in processing plants.
  • Good understanding of cyanide hazards, risk controls, and the safe operation of cyanide handling systems and associated equipment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and other relevant computer systems.
  • Strong presentation, facilitation, and training delivery skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret plant performance metrics and key operational indicators.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work effectively with routine, time-sensitive, and operationally critical tasks.
  • Self-motivated, accountable, and committed to continuous improvement.
