The Nuclear Regulatory Authority (NRA) is Ghana’s statutory body responsible for regulating the peaceful use of nuclear and radioactive materials to protect people, property, and the environment. Guided by its Governing Board, the Authority ensures that nuclear installations and activities in Ghana comply with national legislation and international obligations on nuclear safety, security, and safeguards.
Position Overview
The Nuclear Regulatory Authority invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Director, Nuclear Installations Directorate. This senior leadership role provides strategic, technical, and scientific oversight for the regulation of nuclear installations in Ghana. The Director will ensure that all nuclear facilities are safely evaluated, designed, constructed, operated, and regulated in line with national laws and international nuclear safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Provide technical, scientific, and research leadership to support the regulatory mandate of the Authority.
Ensure the safety, security, and proper regulation of all nuclear installations within the Authority’s jurisdiction.
Oversee the evaluation, licensing, inspection, and regulatory control of nuclear facilities and related activities.
Ensure compliance with national legislation and international nuclear safety, security, and safeguards obligations.
Lead and coordinate research and development activities related to nuclear and radiation safety regulation.
Advise the Director-General and the Governing Board on matters relating to nuclear installations and regulatory policy.
Develop and implement strategies to strengthen regulatory effectiveness, institutional capacity, and technical competence.
Supervise, mentor, and develop professional and technical staff within the Directorate.
Educational & Professional Requirements
Minimum of a PhD in Physical Sciences, relevant Engineering, or an equivalent qualification with emphasis on a nuclear discipline.
In-depth theoretical and practical training in radiation protection, nuclear safety, and regulation of nuclear facilities and materials.
At least 9 years of combined relevant experience in nuclear and radiation safety.
Must hold the rank of Principal Research Scientist or equivalent.
Must have completed senior management development courses.
Must not be more than 55 years old at the time of first appointment.
Terms of Appointment
Appointment is for a five (5) year term, renewable for a second term subject to satisfactory performance.
