Position Summary
The Director, Vaccine Research and Development (VR&D) will provide strategic leadership for the planning, implementation, coordination, and oversight of vaccine research and development programmes. The successful candidate will drive innovation, strengthen partnerships, support policy development, and oversee technology transfer initiatives aimed at advancing domestic vaccine development and manufacturing capabilities.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Provide technical leadership in the formulation, review, and implementation of policies related to vaccine research and development.
- Lead the implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of programmes and activities within the Directorate.
- Ensure the efficient and effective management of the Directorate’s human, financial, and material resources.
- Oversee the review and assessment of proposals for vaccine research and development initiatives.
- Collaborate with academic institutions, research organizations, and local and international partners to advance domestic vaccine and serum research and development.
- Lead technology transfer initiatives for domestically developed vaccines and serums to local manufacturers.
- Coordinate capacity-building programmes in vaccine research and development in partnership with academia and research institutions.
- Facilitate the publication and dissemination of research findings and clinical trial outcomes related to domestic vaccine development.
- Lead the development, implementation, and review of guidelines and Preferred Product Characteristics (PPCs) for domestic vaccine candidates.
- Ensure the development, maintenance, and integrity of databases relating to vaccine candidates, clinical trials, and vaccine research activities.
- Oversee the review and dissemination of research and clinical trial findings to support evidence-based decision-making.
- Build and maintain strategic relationships with government institutions, development partners, private sector stakeholders, and international collaborators.
- Lead the preparation of annual work plans, budgets, and periodic performance reports for the Directorate.
- Oversee the implementation and continuous improvement of the Directorate’s performance management systems.
Qualification Required & Experience
Applicants must possess:
- A minimum of a Master’s degree in Life Sciences, Bio-manufacturing, Public Health, or a related discipline from an accredited tertiary institution.
- Membership in a recognised and relevant professional health body.
- At least ten (10) years of relevant post-Bachelor’s work experience, including a minimum of five (5) years at a senior management level within a reputable institution.
- Demonstrated experience in vaccine research, biotechnology, clinical research, public health programme management, or related scientific leadership roles.
- Strong leadership, stakeholder engagement, policy development, and strategic planning capabilities.
