Position Overview
FHI 360 seeks an experienced GHS (Animal Health & Laboratory) Specialist to strengthen animal health infectious disease surveillance, detection, and laboratory systems in Ghana. The successful candidate will provide technical leadership and hands-on support across animal health and laboratory domains, working closely with government institutions, laboratories, and partners to enhance national and regional capacity under the Global Health Security (GHS) agenda.
This position is based in Accra, and applicants must reside in Ghana. Expatriate allowances will not be provided.
Key Responsibilities
Provide technical leadership in animal health infectious disease surveillance, detection, and response
Strengthen national and regional animal health and laboratory systems in alignment with GHS priorities
Support laboratory capacity building, quality management systems, and biosafety practices
Collaborate with government agencies, laboratories, NGOs, and private sector partners
Support the design and implementation of surveillance protocols and diagnostic strategies
Promote integration of animal health data into national surveillance systems
Provide technical input for project planning, implementation, monitoring, and reporting
Ensure compliance with international standards and national regulations
Contribute to stakeholder engagement, coordination meetings, and technical working groups
Support capacity building through mentoring, training, and knowledge transfer
Required Qualifications & Experience
Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent (required)
Master’s degree in Animal Health, Animal Science, Microbiology, Laboratory Sciences, or a related field
Registration as a Veterinarian or Veterinary Technologist is preferred for Animal Health roles
Specialization in Microbiology or Clinical Laboratory Medicine is preferred for Laboratory Specialist roles
Project Management (PM) certification is an advantage
Additional training or certification in laboratory quality management, biosafety, infectious disease diagnostics, or genomic surveillance is highly desirable
Minimum of 6 years’ experience in national or regional animal health infectious disease surveillance, detection, and laboratory systems strengthening
Prior experience working with NGOs, government agencies, or private sector organizations
Strong understanding of One Health and Global Health Security frameworks
Excellent communication, coordination, and stakeholder engagement skills
Nationality & Residency Requirement
Open to Ghanaian nationals and individuals residing in Ghana
No expatriate allowances will be provided
