Position Summary
The Mechanical Technician – Shovel & Drill maintains, repairs, and optimizes the mechanical systems of heavy mining equipment, particularly shovels and drill rigs. The role ensures equipment reliability, minimizes downtime, and supports safe and efficient mining operations.
The successful candidate demonstrates strong mechanical expertise, attention to detail, and a proactive approach to preventive and corrective maintenance.
Key Responsibilities
The Mechanical Technician will:
Inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair mechanical systems on shovels and drill rigs.
Perform scheduled preventive maintenance in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company standards.
Diagnose mechanical faults and implement effective corrective actions.
Dismantle, overhaul, and reassemble mechanical components including engines, hydraulic systems, transmissions, and braking systems.
Ensure compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns to reduce operational downtime.
Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, and inspection reports.
Collaborate with electrical technicians and operations teams to improve equipment performance and reliability.
Identify and recommend improvements to maintenance practices and safety standards.
Maintain tools, equipment, and work areas in a safe and organized condition.
Perform any other duties assigned to support operational efficiency.
Educational & Professional Requirements
Minimum of a Diploma or Higher National Diploma (HND) in Mechanical Engineering, Heavy Equipment Technology, or a related field.
Proven experience maintaining heavy mining equipment, particularly shovels and drill rigs.
Strong knowledge of hydraulic systems, diesel engines, and heavy-duty mechanical systems.
Ability to interpret technical manuals, schematics, and engineering drawings.
Strong troubleshooting and diagnostic skills.
Commitment to workplace safety and regulatory compliance.
