Project Engineer (Full-Time)

Location: Accra, Ghana

Company Profile

West African Gas Pipeline Company (WAPCo) owns and operates the West African Gas Pipeline, a strategic regional energy infrastructure that transports natural gas across West Africa. WAPCo is committed to operating safely, reliably, and sustainably while supporting economic development and energy security in the region.

We are seeking a highly organized and results-oriented Project Engineer to join our Project Management team. The successful candidate will support the planning, scheduling, cost control, risk management, and successful delivery of engineering and infrastructure projects while ensuring compliance with WAPCo’s standards, procedures, and project governance framework.


Position Summary

The Project Engineer supports the planning, coordination, monitoring, and execution of capital and operational projects throughout the project life cycle. The role focuses on project scheduling, cost management, progress monitoring, risk management, reporting, and stakeholder coordination to ensure projects are delivered safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the required quality standards.


Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities

1. Project Planning, Scheduling and Execution

  • Develop and maintain detailed project schedules using project management software such as Microsoft Project or Primavera.
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of project life cycle processes, policies, and procedures.
  • Work with Project Managers to define project milestones, dependencies, deliverables, and critical paths.
  • Monitor project progress and identify schedule variances, delays, and opportunities for improvement.
  • Gather, analyze, and interpret project performance data to provide timely reporting and decision support.
  • Coordinate schedule updates with project teams and ensure project information remains current and accurate.
  • Participate in project meetings and prepare meeting minutes, action logs, and progress reports.
  • Prepare project dashboards, reports, and presentations for management and project stakeholders.
  • Develop and maintain project scheduling and reporting systems.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to implement schedule recovery strategies when required.
  • Perform schedule variance analysis and recommend corrective actions.
  • Support the preparation, monitoring, and control of project budgets.
  • Monitor project expenditures throughout the project life cycle.
  • Analyze planned versus actual project costs and investigate cost variances.
  • Identify opportunities for cost optimization and improved project efficiency.
  • Assist in evaluating project financial requirements and forecasting project costs.
  • Support supplier engagement and cost negotiations where required.
  • Contribute to improving decommissioning and project close-out processes to minimize costs and losses.
  • Develop financial reporting processes and cost monitoring systems.
  • Recommend cost-effective solutions to improve project performance.

2. Project Risk Management

  • Support the identification, assessment, monitoring, and mitigation of project schedule and cost risks.
  • Assist Project Managers in managing unexpected delays, scope changes, resource conflicts, and emerging project issues.
  • Maintain accurate project schedules, including document control and version management.
  • Coordinate project schedules, task tracking, reporting, and communication across project teams.
  • Develop, implement, and monitor Work Breakdown Structures (WBS) to ensure effective project planning and control.
  • Monitor project progress and identify critical activities requiring management attention.
  • Maintain and regularly update the project risk register.
  • Perform schedule forecasting, baseline tracking, what-if analysis, and contingency planning.
  • Support cross-functional coordination to resolve project issues and monitor action items.
  • Conduct historical project analysis to identify trends and potential cost risks.
  • Facilitate risk identification workshops and brainstorming sessions with project stakeholders.
  • Apply structured risk management tools, checklists, and templates to improve project controls.
  • Assess project risks using Probability-Impact Matrix methodologies.
  • Support sensitivity analysis to evaluate how changes in project variables affect project outcomes.
  • Ensure project risks are appropriately documented, monitored, and communicated throughout the project life cycle.

Working Experience and Educational Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Project Management, or a related discipline.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification or an equivalent professional qualification will be an added advantage.

Experience

  • Minimum of five (5) years’ experience in project scheduling, project controls, cost management, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated understanding of project management principles, methodologies, and project life cycle management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Project.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills with excellent attention to detail.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with WAPCo’s policies, procedures, and engineering standards will be an advantage.
