We invite applications from accomplished and visionary professionals for the position of University Librarian to provide strategic leadership for the University Library Systems and contribute to the advancement of the University’s academic mission.
Position Summary
The University Librarian serves as the chief professional and administrative officer of the University Library Systems and provides strategic leadership for the management, development, and delivery of library and information services across the University.
Reporting to the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, the successful candidate will oversee the effective administration of all University libraries and information resources, ensuring alignment with the University’s strategic objectives and the evolving needs of teaching, learning, research, and innovation.
Key Responsibilities
The University Librarian will:
- Provide strategic, professional, and administrative leadership for the University of Ghana Library Systems, including the Balme Library and its satellite libraries.
- Direct the management and development of all library collections, information resources, and communication materials in accordance with policies, guidelines, and decisions of the Academic Board.
- Implement and oversee the execution of decisions of the Library Board as approved by the Academic Board.
- Lead initiatives that enhance access to scholarly resources, digital information systems, and emerging library technologies.
- Develop and implement strategies that support teaching, learning, research excellence, and knowledge dissemination.
- Ensure effective stewardship of library resources, infrastructure, budgets, and personnel.
- Promote innovation, collaboration, and continuous improvement across the University Library Systems.
- Foster partnerships with local and international institutions to strengthen library services and scholarly engagement.
- Provide expert advice on library and information management matters to University leadership.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Pro Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs.
Qualifications and Experience
The ideal candidate must:
- Hold Professorial status, be at the rank of Principal Librarian or equivalent, or possess qualifications that would support appointment to a comparable level within an academic or research institution.
- Possess a higher degree by research in Librarianship, Information Studies, or a related discipline.
- Have a minimum of fifteen (15) years of relevant post-qualification experience, supported by internationally recognized scholarly contributions in Librarianship and Information Studies.
- Demonstrate extensive practical experience across all major areas of university library administration and management.
- Possess strong leadership, strategic planning, and organizational capabilities.
- Demonstrate proficiency in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and contemporary library information systems and applications.
- Have a proven ability to lead institutional transformation, innovation, and service excellence within a complex academic environment.
Tenure
The University Librarian shall hold office for an initial term of three (3) years under terms and conditions determined by the Appointments Board and may be eligible for re-appointment for an additional term of up to three (3) years, subject to University regulations.
