About the Role

The Governing Council of the University for Development Studies (UDS) invites applications from highly qualified and distinguished academics for the position of Vice-Chancellor, which will become vacant in mid-2026.

The Vice-Chancellor is the Chief Academic and Administrative Officer of the University, responsible for providing visionary leadership, ensuring academic excellence, promoting research and innovation, maintaining discipline, and representing the University at national and international levels.

This is a prestigious leadership opportunity for an accomplished academic with a strong track record in university administration, governance, research, and institutional development.

Key Responsibilities

The Vice-Chancellor shall:

  • Provide strategic academic and administrative leadership to advance UDS’s mission, vision, and values.
  • Promote excellence in teaching, learning, research, innovation, and community engagement.
  • Ensure effective governance, discipline, and compliance with statutory and regulatory frameworks.
  • Lead institutional planning, policy implementation, and performance management.
  • Represent the University at national, regional, and international fora.
  • Strengthen partnerships with government, industry, donors, alumni, and development partners.
  • Drive fundraising, resource mobilization, and prudent financial management.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, transparency, diversity, and institutional excellence.

Qualification & Experience Requirements

Applicants must:

  • Hold the academic rank of Professor.
  • Be a distinguished scholar of international repute, with a strong research and publication record.
  • Demonstrate proven leadership experience in tertiary education or comparable institutions.
  • Possess outstanding integrity, vision, communication, and people-management skills.
  • Show capacity for fundraising, financial stewardship, and strategic resource management.
  • Be eligible to complete one full four-year term before attaining the age of 60.

Term of Appointment

  • Four (4) years, renewable for one additional term subject to satisfactory performance.

Application Requirements

Interested candidates must submit:
1. Seven (7) copies of a formal application letter and detailed curriculum vitae (CV).
2. A Vision Statement (maximum of five pages) outlining strategic priorities and development plans for UDS.
3. Names and contact details of three (3) referees, who will be required to submit confidential reports on the applicant.
