Established in 2001 and headquartered in Washington, D.C., OCEANA leads strategic campaigns designed to deliver measurable improvements in marine management and ocean conservation across multiple countries. The organization places strong emphasis on science-based solutions to identify challenges and drive impactful change.

OCEANA opened its first African office in early 2026 in Accra, Ghana. The Ghana office works in close partnership with coastal communities to rebuild fish populations, improve nutrition, and strengthen sustainable livelihoods across the region. The office fosters a collaborative, inclusive, and welcoming environment that values scientific integrity, community engagement, and impactful communications.


Position Overview

OCEANA seeks a highly skilled and strategic Senior Manager, Communications to lead and execute communications initiatives for its Ghana office. The successful candidate will develop compelling narratives, strengthen stakeholder engagement, and elevate OCEANA’s visibility across Ghana and international platforms.

You will play a key role in translating scientific and policy-driven work into accessible, persuasive, and impactful communications that support marine conservation goals. You will work closely with internal teams, scientists, policymakers, media professionals, and coastal communities.


Key Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement comprehensive communications strategies aligned with OCEANA’s campaign goals in Ghana.
  • Write, edit, and oversee production of high-quality communications materials, including press releases, opinion editorials, speeches, reports, video scripts, and digital content.
  • Manage media relations and serve as a key spokesperson when required.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with journalists, policymakers, partners, and stakeholders.
  • Support campaign teams by translating complex scientific information into clear, engaging messaging.
  • Oversee content for digital platforms and ensure consistency in tone, accuracy, and brand alignment.
  • Monitor media coverage and provide timely analysis and reporting.
  • Ensure all communications activities are conducted with professionalism, accuracy, and strict confidentiality.
  • Manage communications budgets and related administrative responsibilities.
  • Represent OCEANA at meetings, events, and stakeholder engagements with professionalism and integrity.
  • Collaborate across teams in a fast-paced, campaign-driven environment.
  • Undertake occasional travel as required.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Mass Communication, Marketing, Public Relations, or a related field.
  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of 6 years of communications experience, including at least 2 years within the non-profit or advocacy sector.
  • Experience working with international media is an advantage.
  • Valid authorization to work in Ghana is required.

  • Strong writing and editorial skills with experience producing press releases, opinion articles, video scripts, and other media content.

  • High level of professionalism, discretion, and sound judgment in handling sensitive information.
  • Proven ability to represent an organization effectively to diverse stakeholders, including scientists, policymakers, and media.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities in a fast-paced campaign setting.
