JOB TITLE: Director, Legal – National Media Commission
Location: Accra, Ghana
Employment Type: Full-Time


Company Profile

The National Media Commission (NMC) promotes and safeguards media freedom, independence, and accountability in Ghana. The Commission ensures compliance with media laws and regulations while supporting a fair, ethical, and responsible media landscape in the country.


Role Purpose

The Director, Legal provides strategic legal leadership for the Commission. You will actively guide legal compliance, manage risk, oversee regulatory enforcement, and ensure that the Commission operates within all applicable laws, policies, and statutory frameworks.


Key Responsibilities

You will actively:

  • Draft, review, and provide legal instruments including contracts, loan agreements, leases, and other binding documents for the Commission
  • Advise Management on legal matters affecting the Commission’s operations and decision-making
  • Ensure full compliance with statutory legislation, regulatory frameworks, and internal policies
  • Liaise with divisional heads to enforce regulatory and compliance requirements across the Commission
  • Represent the Commission in courts, tribunals, and other legal proceedings
  • Compile and prepare legal cases for review and appropriate action
  • Provide technical legal guidance on risk management and compliance to prevent regulatory breaches and penalties
  • Develop and implement risk management and compliance policies
  • Supervise compliance with media laws and regulations across media enterprises, MDAs, and MMDAs
  • Collate and prepare data for annual and periodic legal reports
  • Mediate and arbitrate disputes involving the Commission and third parties
  • Support corporate governance, procurement, budgeting, and audit compliance processes

Qualification & Experience Requirements

You must have:

  • A Master’s Degree in Law (LLM) from an accredited institution
  • A Bachelor of Laws (LLB) and Barrister at Law (BL) qualification
  • Membership and call to the Ghana Bar
  • A minimum of 4 years post-call relevant experience in a reputable organization

OR (In-Service Entry):

  • Current position at Senior Legal Manager grade
  • Minimum of 3 years at Legal Manager level
  • Satisfactory performance appraisal record
  • Successful completion of a competitive selection interview

  • Knowledge of finance, procurement, budgeting, and audit regulations

  • Understanding of international human rights conventions and treaties
  • Ability to inspire, lead, and motivate teams effectively
