Role Overview

The Gender Officer will drive the integration of gender equality and women’s empowerment across FAO’s programmes and operations. The role requires a strategic and analytical professional who can influence policy, support governments, and deliver impactful gender-transformative initiatives in agriculture, food security, and rural development.


Key Functions

  • Lead and contribute to multidisciplinary teams, working groups, and organizational committees, providing specialized expertise on gender issues
  • Develop and implement analytical, monitoring, and reporting frameworks to support programme delivery and impact assessment
  • Design and conduct gender and socio-economic research, including data collection, validation, analysis, and reporting
  • Provide technical and policy advice to Regional, Subregional, and Country Offices, and support field projects in both development and humanitarian contexts
  • Promote international collaboration, advocate best practices, and contribute technical expertise at global meetings and conferences
  • Coordinate capacity-building initiatives, including training workshops, seminars, and knowledge-sharing activities
  • Support resource mobilization efforts in alignment with FAO’s strategic priorities

Specific Responsibilities

  • Conduct policy analysis and research to address gender inequalities and promote women’s empowerment in agriculture, food security, and nutrition
  • Lead the integration of gender-transformative approaches across regional strategies and field programmes
  • Support governments and regional bodies in developing and implementing gender-sensitive policies and programmes, including in crisis-affected settings
  • Produce knowledge products and learning materials, and deliver training to strengthen institutional capacity
  • Organize and facilitate international meetings, workshops, and policy dialogues
  • Advocate for the integration of gender equality in agricultural and rural development initiatives
  • Implement gender accountability mechanisms, including audits and performance reviews
  • Serve as the regional gender focal point and coordinate the Gender Focal Point (GFP) network
  • Provide technical guidance on gender mainstreaming and gender-based violence considerations
  • Represent FAO at international and intergovernmental forums, building strategic partnerships
  • Coordinate multi-stakeholder partnerships, programmes, and projects
  • Perform additional duties as required

Qualifications and Experience

  • Advanced university degree (Master’s or equivalent) in Gender Studies, Social Sciences, Rural Development, Agricultural Economics, Social Anthropology, or a related field
  • Minimum of 7 years’ relevant experience in gender equality, socio-economic analysis, policy development, and capacity building in development and/or humanitarian contexts
  • Proven experience in gender mainstreaming, policy formulation, and programme implementation
  • Strong experience supporting governments and institutions on gender-sensitive policies
  • Demonstrated ability in both quantitative and qualitative socio-economic analysis
  • Experience organizing training, awareness campaigns, and capacity development initiatives
  • Experience in resource mobilization is an advantage
  • Experience working in the African region and/or with UN agencies is an asset
  • Proficiency in English (Level C) and working knowledge (Level B) of another FAO official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish); French proficiency is an advantage
