Position Summary
The Drill Helper supports drilling operations in a large open-pit mining environment by assisting Drill Operators in safe, efficient, and productive drilling activities. The role ensures smooth drilling operations by supporting equipment setup, maintaining worksite safety, and following strict operational procedures.
This position is ideal for a disciplined, safety-conscious individual who is eager to build a career in mining operations and gain hands-on experience in drilling activities.
Key Responsibilities
Drilling Support Operations
- Assist Drill Operators in carrying out drilling activities in line with operational plans.
- Support the setup, positioning, and preparation of drilling equipment.
- Handle drill rods, tools, and related materials safely and efficiently.
- Assist in bit sharpening and other drilling support tasks when required.
- Ensure smooth coordination of drilling activities to support production targets.
Safety & Compliance
- Adhere strictly to all health, safety, environmental, and operational procedures.
- Identify and report hazards, unsafe conditions, and incidents promptly.
- Follow safety instructions, especially when working around hazardous materials and heavy equipment.
- Participate actively in safety meetings, toolbox talks, and training sessions.
- Promote a safe and disciplined work environment at all times.
Equipment & Site Support
- Support basic inspection and maintenance of drilling tools and equipment.
- Ensure drilling areas remain clean, organized, and safe.
- Assist in transporting materials and equipment as required.
- Follow all operational procedures to maintain equipment integrity and efficiency.
Communication & Coordination
- Communicate effectively with Drill Operators and team members using approved signals and methods.
- Follow instructions accurately and respond promptly to operational needs.
- Work collaboratively with team members to achieve drilling targets.
- Maintain clear and effective communication in a high-risk work environment.
Qualifications
To be considered for this role, applicants must possess:
- A minimum of a Senior High School Certificate.
- A valid Driver’s License Class D (mandatory).
- A Learning & Development (L&D) Certificate.
- Additional technical or vocational training in drilling or mining operations will be an advantage.
Experience
Applicants should have:
- A minimum of one (1) year of drilling and off-siding experience in a large open-pit mine or quarry environment.
- Practical experience supporting drilling operations in a mining or heavy industrial setting.
- Driving experience in an operational or industrial environment.
- Bit sharpening experience will be considered an added advantage.
Technical Competencies
The successful candidate should demonstrate:
- Strong concentration and focus under operational conditions.
- Good time management and ability to follow work schedules.
- Ability to communicate effectively using hand signals and operational cues.
- Strong adherence to procedures, especially around hazardous materials and equipment.
- Good interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in a team environment.
- Ability to follow instructions accurately and consistently.
