Position Summary
The Shift Boss will supervise underground mining operations during assigned shifts, ensuring work is executed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with approved mine plans. The successful candidate will coordinate personnel and equipment, monitor operational performance, promote a strong safety culture, and work collaboratively with cross-functional teams to achieve production and operational objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Underground Operations
- Supervise and coordinate underground mining activities during assigned shifts to achieve production targets safely and efficiently.
- Ensure mining operations comply with approved mine plans, operational procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Monitor underground development activities, including vertical and lateral development, to ensure work progresses according to schedule.
- Allocate personnel, equipment, and resources to maximize productivity and operational effectiveness.
Safety, Health and Compliance
- Promote and maintain a proactive safety culture across all underground operations.
- Identify operational hazards, assess risks, and implement effective control measures.
- Ensure compliance with company safety standards, mining legislation, and Minerals Commission regulations.
- Conduct workplace inspections, safety briefings, and incident investigations where required.
- Ensure employees and contractors follow established safe work procedures at all times.
Operational Planning and Performance
- Monitor daily operational performance and implement corrective actions where necessary.
- Interpret production and operational data to support informed tactical decision-making.
- Contribute to operational planning by aligning work activities with project schedules, production priorities, and cost objectives.
- Prepare accurate shift reports and maintain operational records.
Team Leadership
- Lead, coach, and motivate underground crews to achieve high standards of safety, productivity, and performance.
- Foster teamwork, accountability, and effective communication across operational teams.
- Support the development of employees through coaching, mentoring, and knowledge sharing.
- Build strong working relationships with engineering, geology, maintenance, planning, and contractor teams.
Continuous Improvement
- Identify opportunities to improve mining processes, operational efficiency, and resource utilization.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance productivity, safety, and operational performance.
- Contribute to operational reviews and recommend practical solutions to address performance challenges.
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree or Diploma in Mining Engineering, or equivalent operational mining experience.
- Underground Shift Boss Certificate of Competency (or equivalent) as required by the Chief Inspector of Mines, Minerals Commission, Ghana.
Experience
- Two (2) to five (5) years of operational experience in underground mining.
- At least two (2) years of experience in a supervisory role within underground mining operations.
- Experience working within contractor-owner partnership or alliance-style mining environments.
- Demonstrated experience in underground vertical and lateral mine development activities.
Knowledge, Skills and Competencies
- Sound knowledge of underground mining operations and the mining value chain.
- Familiarity with mining software and digital operational tools.
- Understanding of project planning, work sequencing, scheduling, and cost management principles.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret operational data and make effective tactical decisions.
- Advanced understanding of workplace health and safety practices, hazard identification, and risk management.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong leadership, coaching, and team development capabilities.
- Ability to build effective cross-functional relationships and collaborate with diverse stakeholders.
- Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work underground and travel between operational work areas as required.
- Ability to work with computer systems for reporting, planning, and operational monitoring.
- Physically fit to meet site medical and functional capacity requirements.
- Valid Ghanaian manual driver’s licence.
