We are seeking a detail-oriented and innovative Draughtsman, Mechanical to support the design, development, and execution of mechanical engineering projects. This role offers an excellent opportunity to work on underground mining infrastructure and construction projects while collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality engineering solutions.

Position Summary

The Draughtsman, Mechanical will prepare accurate engineering drawings and technical documentation to support mechanical design, construction, and project execution. The successful candidate will collaborate with engineering and project teams to produce high-quality 2D and 3D drawings, ensure compliance with engineering standards, and contribute to the successful delivery of underground mining and infrastructure projects.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanical Design and Drafting

  • Prepare detailed 2D and 3D mechanical engineering drawings using approved computer-aided design (CAD) software.
  • Interpret engineering sketches, technical specifications, and design requirements to produce accurate and compliant drawings.
  • Review and revise drawings to reflect engineering changes, design improvements, and project requirements.
  • Ensure all drawings comply with company engineering standards and applicable regulatory requirements.

Engineering and Project Support

  • Provide drafting support for mechanical, structural, piping, platework, and underground infrastructure projects.
  • Work closely with engineers, project teams, contractors, and consultants to deliver accurate design documentation.
  • Assist in preparing technical documentation required for project planning, construction, commissioning, and maintenance activities.
  • Support minor engineering projects from concept through implementation in accordance with AngloGold Ashanti project management standards.

Quality Assurance and Technical Accuracy

  • Verify dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, surface finishes, and engineering details to ensure drawing accuracy.
  • Perform tolerance checks and maintain dimensional integrity across engineering designs.
  • Ensure drawing revisions are accurately controlled and documented throughout the project lifecycle.

Operational Excellence and Continuous Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to improve drafting processes, design efficiency, and engineering documentation.
  • Apply analytical skills to resolve technical design issues and recommend practical engineering solutions.
  • Support business improvement initiatives that enhance operational performance and project delivery.

Safety and Collaboration

  • Apply company safety standards in all engineering and project activities.
  • Participate in risk assessments, safety observations, and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Build productive working relationships with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and stakeholders.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Mechanical Engineering or an equivalent Mechanical Engineering qualification.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification is an advantage.

Experience

  • One (1) to three (3) years of relevant experience in mining, construction, or heavy industrial operations.
  • Experience working within multidisciplinary engineering, design, construction, or commissioning teams is desirable.
  • Exposure to underground mining, including structural, mechanical, piping, and platework (SMPP) projects, is an advantage.
  • Experience supporting engineering projects through design, construction, and commissioning phases is desirable.

Knowledge, Skills and Competencies

  • Sound understanding of underground mining practices and construction projects.
  • Proficiency in CAD software with the ability to produce accurate 2D and 3D engineering drawings.
  • Strong ability to interpret engineering sketches, specifications, dimensions, tolerances, material specifications, and design instructions.
  • Knowledge of engineering drawing standards and dimensional accuracy requirements.
  • Strong analytical, technical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Good financial awareness and ability to analyse technical and operational data.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including technical report writing.
  • Knowledge of business improvement principles and change management practices.
  • Strong interpersonal, consultation, negotiation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with engineers, contractors, consultants, and operational teams.
  • Basic understanding of project management principles and the ability to support or lead minor engineering projects.
  • Commitment to innovation, continuous improvement, and operational excellence.
  • Ability to build effective working relationships founded on trust, accountability, and teamwork.
