Medical Laboratory Scientist

Location: Takoradi, Ghana
Employment Type: Full-Time

We are seeking a detail-oriented and professional Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our dynamic laboratory team.

Role Purpose

The Medical Laboratory Scientist will perform a wide range of diagnostic laboratory analyses to support accurate clinical decision-making and patient management. The successful candidate will ensure high standards of laboratory practice, maintain quality assurance systems, and contribute to efficient, safe, and reliable diagnostic services.

Key Responsibilities

Diagnostic Testing

  • Perform a wide range of laboratory tests in Hematology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Immunology, and Parasitology in accordance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Conduct accurate specimen analysis and ensure timely processing of laboratory samples.
  • Support phlebotomy and specimen collection activities while maintaining patient safety and comfort.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

  • Implement and maintain internal quality control procedures to ensure accuracy and reliability of test results.
  • Participate in external quality assessment (EQA) programmes to uphold laboratory standards.
  • Adhere strictly to biosafety, infection prevention, and chemical safety protocols at all times.

Equipment Operation & Maintenance

  • Operate, calibrate, and maintain laboratory equipment and automated analyzers.
  • Perform routine troubleshooting and report equipment faults promptly.
  • Ensure optimal functioning of laboratory instruments to minimise downtime and service disruption.

Reporting & Data Management

  • Validate, interpret, and accurately record laboratory results in the Laboratory Information System (LIS).
  • Ensure timely reporting of critical values to clinicians and relevant stakeholders.
  • Maintain accurate documentation and uphold data integrity in all laboratory records.

Collaboration & Clinical Support

  • Work closely with physicians, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to support patient diagnosis and treatment.
  • Communicate effectively with clinical teams to ensure seamless patient care delivery.
  • Contribute to a collaborative and patient-focused healthcare environment.

Qualifications, Experience & Competencies

Education & Licensure

  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Medical Laboratory Science from a recognised and accredited institution.
  • Valid professional license from the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPC), Ghana.

Experience

  • Minimum of two (2) to three (3) years of post-internship experience in a busy clinical or hospital laboratory environment.
  • Experience with automated laboratory systems and manual diagnostic techniques is required.

Knowledge, Skills & Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of laboratory medicine, diagnostic procedures, and quality assurance systems.
  • High attention to detail and strong analytical thinking skills.
  • Proficiency in laboratory equipment operation and Laboratory Information Systems (LIS).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a patient-centred approach.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure in a fast-paced clinical environment.
  • Strong ethical standards and commitment to patient confidentiality and professional integrity.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.
