Position Summary
The Art Teacher – Key Stage 3 & 4 will plan and deliver engaging Art and Design lessons aligned with the Cambridge curriculum. The successful candidate will inspire students to develop technical skills, creative confidence, and independent thinking while supporting strong academic outcomes and maintaining a safe, inclusive, and stimulating learning environment.
All responsibilities must be carried out in accordance with Ghana International School’s international and multicultural ethos, safeguarding standards, policies, and professional Code of Conduct.
Key Responsibilities
Teaching and Learning
- Plan and deliver engaging, structured weekly Art and Design lessons that align with school policies and curriculum requirements.
- Teach Art and Design to Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 students while addressing individual learning needs and abilities.
- Differentiate teaching approaches to ensure all students access the curriculum and achieve their full potential.
- Apply a range of creative teaching strategies that encourage curiosity, experimentation, independent learning, and artistic growth.
- Develop students’ creative, critical, and reflective thinking skills.
- Create a caring, inclusive, and disciplined classroom environment that supports effective learning.
Cambridge Curriculum Delivery and Assessment
- Deliver the Cambridge Art and Design curriculum effectively and ensure full coverage of syllabus requirements and assessment objectives.
- Guide students in developing high-quality portfolios that demonstrate:
- Research and exploration.
- Experimentation with different media and techniques.
- Recording ideas, observations, and creative processes.
- Development of final outcomes and evaluation.
- Adhere to Cambridge International examination regulations, including IGCSE, A Level, and other applicable frameworks.
- Assess, mark, record, and provide timely feedback on classwork, homework, tests, assignments, and coursework.
- Support students in achieving strong academic outcomes and examination success.
Student Progress and Support
- Monitor, assess, record, and report student progress in line with school policies.
- Identify students requiring additional support and collaborate with the Head of Department to provide appropriate interventions.
- Provide guidance and support that contributes to students’ intellectual, emotional, social, and moral development.
- Encourage students to develop confidence, creativity, and a lifelong appreciation for art.
Classroom Management and Safeguarding
- Maintain high standards of student behaviour and discipline in accordance with the school’s expectations and Student Code of Conduct.
- Ensure the safety and well-being of students within classrooms, art studios, and during educational trips.
- Supervise students during lessons, breaks, school activities, events, and excursions as required.
- Manage art materials, tools, and equipment responsibly while ensuring safe usage practices.
- Follow all safeguarding, child protection, health, and safety procedures.
Curriculum Development and Collaboration
- Contribute to the development, review, and improvement of the Art and Design curriculum.
- Collaborate with the Head of Department and senior leadership on curriculum planning, teaching strategies, and assessment practices.
- Support cross-curricular projects and interdisciplinary learning initiatives.
- Participate actively in departmental meetings, staff meetings, and professional learning activities.
Professional Development
- Engage in continuous professional development to enhance teaching expertise and subject knowledge.
- Participate in school-based training, workshops, and external professional development programmes.
- Share effective teaching practices and contribute to departmental learning initiatives.
- Participate in relevant conferences and training opportunities related to international education where required.
Enrichment and Wider School Contribution
- Organise and support Art and Design clubs, creative activities, and enrichment programmes.
- Plan and coordinate exhibitions, displays, and showcases of student artwork.
- Organise educational visits and creative experiences that enhance student learning.
- Participate actively in school events, functions, and activities beyond normal teaching hours when required.
- Undertake pastoral responsibilities where assigned.
Examinations and Academic Excellence
- Prepare students effectively for internal and external examinations.
- Support accurate assessment, recording, and reporting of examination coursework.
- Maintain high academic standards in line with Cambridge International expectations.
- Contribute to strategies that improve student achievement and departmental performance.
General Responsibilities
- Work collaboratively with the Principal, Vice-Principal, Head of Department, and colleagues to strengthen teaching and learning.
- Contribute to whole-school improvement initiatives and strategic development activities.
- Perform other reasonable duties assigned by the Head of Department or school leadership.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate will possess:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts, Art Education, Design, or a related field.
- A recognised teaching qualification such as PGDE, PGCE, B.Ed, QTS, or equivalent is preferred.
- Proven experience teaching Art and Design at secondary level (Key Stage 3 & 4).
- Experience delivering the Cambridge curriculum will be an advantage.
- Experience supporting students in developing portfolios for external assessment.
- Strong knowledge of art techniques, creative processes, and multiple artistic disciplines.
- Excellent understanding of Cambridge assessment objectives and standards.
- Strong classroom management, communication, and interpersonal skills.
- The ability to inspire creativity, confidence, and critical thinking in students.
- A passion for international education and student development.
