Position Summary
The Legal Director – Mobile Financial Services will lead the legal function by providing strategic legal counsel across commercial operations, corporate governance, regulatory compliance, risk management, and major business transactions. The role requires an experienced legal executive capable of balancing legal risk with commercial opportunities while supporting sustainable business growth and maintaining the highest ethical standards.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Legal Leadership
- Develop and execute a forward-looking legal strategy that supports business growth, digital transformation, network expansion, and Mobile Financial Services.
- Serve as the principal legal advisor to the Managing Director, Chief Executive Officer, Executive Committee, and Board of Directors on strategic business decisions.
- Provide expert legal guidance on complex commercial, regulatory, governance, and operational matters.
- Strengthen corporate governance frameworks and promote a strong compliance culture across the organization.
- Lead legal aspects of mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures, strategic partnerships, and other major corporate transactions in collaboration with the Group.
Regulatory and Compliance Management
- Ensure full compliance with all applicable telecommunications, financial services, and corporate regulatory requirements.
- Maintain effective relationships with key regulatory authorities, including the National Communications Authority (NCA), the Bank of Ghana, and other relevant agencies.
- Oversee compliance with Anti-Money Laundering (AML), Counter Financing of Terrorism (CFT), data protection, anti-bribery, anti-corruption, anti-harassment, and corporate ethics requirements.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments and advise management on business implications.
Commercial and Contract Management
- Lead the negotiation, drafting, review, and execution of high-value commercial contracts and strategic agreements.
- Ensure effective governance of vendor, supplier, and strategic partner contracts through appropriate risk allocation and performance standards.
- Provide legal leadership for major commercial projects, capital investments, financing arrangements, acquisitions, and strategic initiatives.
- Support business teams by providing commercially focused legal solutions that enable sustainable growth.
Risk Management and Dispute Resolution
- Identify, assess, and mitigate legal, contractual, regulatory, and operational risks across the organization.
- Lead the management of litigation, arbitration, regulatory investigations, and external legal counsel.
- Develop proactive legal risk management strategies that protect the company’s interests.
- Provide legal leadership during regulatory investigations, operational incidents, disputes, and reputational crises.
Leadership and People Management
- Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing legal team that delivers strategic business value.
- Drive succession planning, talent development, and continuous capability building within the legal function.
- Foster a culture of integrity, accountability, ethical leadership, inclusion, and professional excellence.
- Build trusted relationships with executive leadership and key stakeholders across the organization.
- Promote collaboration between legal, compliance, risk, and business teams to support organizational objectives.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants should possess:
- Bachelor’s Degree in Law (LL.B); a qualifying professional legal certification and admission to practice law are required.
- A postgraduate qualification such as an LL.M, MBA, or equivalent will be an added advantage.
- Minimum of 15 years’ progressive senior legal experience within a leading corporate organization, telecommunications company, financial institution, or multinational environment.
- Demonstrated experience leading mergers and acquisitions, complex commercial transactions, financial transactions, regulatory compliance, corporate governance, and enterprise risk management.
- Experience engaging with government agencies, regulators, and public sector stakeholders.
- Proven senior leadership experience managing multidisciplinary legal teams.
