Position Summary
MTN Ghana is seeking a highly skilled and proactive Specialist, DBA Operations to manage, maintain, and optimise the organisation’s database infrastructure. The successful candidate will ensure the availability, security, performance, and reliability of enterprise databases while supporting critical business applications and driving continuous improvement across database operations.

Key Responsibilities
The successful candidate will:
- Create, configure, and maintain databases for development, testing, and production environments.
- Plan, implement, monitor, and test database backup and recovery strategies to ensure business continuity.
- Monitor daily backup and recovery activities and resolve issues promptly.
- Maintain disk groups, tablespaces, and data files to optimise database performance and storage utilisation.
- Create, manage, and maintain database user accounts and access controls.
- Implement and enforce database security policies, standards, and best practices.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, tune, and optimise database performance to maximise system availability and efficiency.
- Conduct daily database health checks and proactively resolve performance or operational issues.
- Support database upgrades, migrations, expansions, and technology refresh initiatives.
- Plan database storage requirements and continuously monitor available disk capacity.
- Prepare and maintain accurate technical documentation, project records, and knowledge-sharing materials.
- Collaborate with cross-functional technology teams to support business-critical systems and projects.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Line Manager.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
Applicants must possess:
- A minimum of a First Degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline.
- Relevant database administration certifications.
- ITIL certification or other recognised software and systems certifications.
- Knowledge of COBIT 5: Business Framework for the Governance and Management of Enterprise IT.
- Working knowledge of Agile methodologies and relevant Agile certifications.
Experience
- A minimum of three (3) years’ experience in the technology or telecommunications industry, with hands-on responsibility for database administration and operations.
Technical Knowledge and Competencies
The ideal candidate should demonstrate:
- Strong expertise in database administration across Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, MySQL, Cassandra, MongoDB, PostgreSQL, and related platforms.
- Advanced SQL (Structured Query Language) scripting skills.
- Experience with database replication technologies such as Oracle Data Guard and Oracle GoldenGate.
- Strong understanding of database security principles and access management.
- Knowledge of Network File System (NFS) and clustered storage solutions.
- Working knowledge of UNIX/Linux system administration.
- Experience with shell scripting and automation.
- Knowledge of database capacity planning, monitoring, and performance optimisation.
- Experience with Real Application Clusters (RAC), Grid Infrastructure Administration, Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM), and related enterprise database technologies.
Relevant professional certifications such as the following will be an advantage:
- Oracle Certified Associate (OCA) or Oracle Certified Professional (OCP)
- Oracle GoldenGate Certified Implementation
- Data Guard Implementation
- MySQL Database Administration
- MongoDB Database Administration
- Cassandra Database Administration
- Microsoft Certified Database Administrator (MCDB) or equivalent
