Role Overview

The Director, Assurance provides strategic leadership for the Foundation’s assurance function, strengthening governance, risk management, and internal controls across a complex, global operating environment. This role partners closely with executive leadership, the Board, and diverse stakeholders to deliver independent, insightful, and forward-looking assurance that supports the Foundation’s mission and growth.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and continuously strengthen the Foundation’s assurance and internal audit function

  • Develop and execute a risk-based assurance strategy aligned with organizational priorities

  • Provide independent assurance over governance, risk management, and internal control effectiveness

  • Oversee audit planning, execution, reporting, and follow-up across multi-jurisdictional and multi-currency operations

  • Identify control gaps, process inefficiencies, and emerging risks, and recommend practical, value-adding solutions

  • Partner with management, the Executive Team, and the Board to communicate assurance insights clearly and effectively

  • Build, coach, and mentor a high-performing assurance team, fostering professional growth and accountability

  • Collaborate across functions and disciplines to support enterprise risk management and strategic initiatives

  • Apply sound judgment in complex and ambiguous situations while maintaining independence and integrity

  • Uphold and model the Foundation’s values, ethics, and commitment to impact


Education, Qualifications & Experience

  • Master’s degree in a relevant field

  • Relevant professional qualification with accreditation from a recognized institute of internal auditors or professional accounting body

  • Active membership in a relevant professional body

  • Minimum of fifteen (15) years’ overall professional experience, with at least five (5) years at management level

  • At least ten (10) years’ experience in a senior internal audit role within large and/or global organizations

  • Experience in audit or risk roles in complex, multi-jurisdictional environments

  • Experience working in the development sector is an asset

  • Proven success building and scaling internal audit or assurance functions in high-growth organizations

  • Strong project management, audit, risk, and control assessment expertise

  • Advanced working knowledge of audit policies, procedures, and leading practices

  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret business processes and identify risks and opportunities

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including engagement at Executive and Board levels

  • Demonstrated ability to coach, mentor, and motivate high-performing teams

  • Strategic, forward-thinking mindset with strong collaboration and agility

  • High integrity, sound judgment, courage, and confidence in upholding professional convictions

  • Deep cultural awareness and sensitivity, with experience engaging diverse global and Pan-African stakeholders

  • Strong alignment with and commitment to the Mastercard Foundation’s values
