Position Overview

CSIR invites applications from highly qualified and visionary Ghanaians for the position of Director of CSIR-Water Research Institute (WRI) and Director of CSIR-Institute of Industrial Research (IIR). The successful candidate will provide strategic leadership, drive research excellence, and ensure the effective management and development of the institute. The role requires a strong commitment to advancing science, innovation, and national development.


Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will:

  • Serve as Head of the Institute and report directly to the Director-General
  • Provide overall leadership and manage the day-to-day administration of the institute
  • Coordinate prioritized research activities under the strategic guidance of the Director-General
  • Establish and strengthen partnerships with relevant national and international institutions
  • Promote technology transfer, innovation, and commercialization of research outputs
  • Coordinate research funding initiatives and support the development of research priorities and science and technology plans
  • Lead the effective management and development of human resources within the institute
  • Translate policy directives into actionable research and development programmes
  • Ensure the institute contributes effectively to national development objectives

Qualifications and Requirements

Academic Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent qualification in Biological, Physical, or Engineering Sciences or related discipline (for WRI)
  • PhD or equivalent qualification in Engineering Sciences or Physical Sciences (for IIR)
  • Must be from a recognized university or research institution

Experience

  • Minimum of 12 years’ experience in Research and Development (R&D)
  • At least 5 years of proven experience in a senior management or leadership role
  • Strong track record of scientific publications and research output equivalent to Principal Research Scientist or Associate Professor level

Core Requirements

  • Proven ability to lead, organize, and coordinate research institutions
  • Strong knowledge of relevant sector agencies and stakeholders
  • Ability to engage effectively with top-level management in public and private institutions
  • Demonstrated ability to attract and manage research funding (internal and external)
  • Proven capacity to inspire and manage multidisciplinary research teams
  • Ability to translate strategic policy into operational research programmes

Age Limit

Applicants must be 55 years or below at the time of application


Tenure

The appointment is for an initial term of 5 years and may be renewed based on satisfactory performance
