We are seeking a skilled and safety-focused Electrical & Instrumentation Technician to join our Maintenance team in the Bono Region. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining, troubleshooting, and improving electrical and instrumentation systems that support safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations.

Position Purpose

The Electrical & Instrumentation Technician will perform preventive, corrective, and breakdown maintenance on electrical, control, and instrumentation systems across the operation. The role requires strong technical expertise, a proactive approach to problem-solving, and a commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety, reliability, and operational performance.

Key Responsibilities

Electrical and Instrumentation Maintenance

  • Execute scheduled electrical and instrumentation maintenance activities safely and in accordance with Standard Task Procedures (STPs), Job Hazard Analysis/Field Level Risk Assessments (JHA/FLRA), SAFE checks, and company standards.
  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve electrical, instrumentation, technical, and operational faults affecting plant performance and equipment reliability.
  • Install, inspect, test, maintain, and repair electrical power systems, control systems, motors, variable speed drives, and associated equipment.
  • Perform maintenance activities in accordance with original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications and approved engineering standards.
  • Interpret electrical schematics, single-line diagrams, wiring diagrams, technical drawings, and circuit designs to support maintenance activities.
  • Safely operate hand tools, portable electrical tools, workshop equipment, and diagnostic instruments.
  • Apply lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedures during equipment isolation, maintenance, and recommissioning.
  • Monitor substations, motor control centres, electrical distribution systems, motors, and drives to ensure optimal performance.
  • Respond promptly to breakdowns, equipment failures, and power interruptions.
  • Maintain spare parts availability and contribute to inventory optimization initiatives.
  • Support the development and continuous improvement of Standard Task Procedures.
  • Contribute to initiatives aimed at reducing downtime, improving equipment reliability, and controlling maintenance costs.

Health, Safety and Environmental Management

  • Promote and maintain compliance with Newmont’s Health, Safety, Loss Prevention (HSLP), Environmental, and Social Responsibility standards.
  • Support adherence to Newmont’s Integrated Management System, corporate values, and operational procedures.
  • Ensure electrical installations and maintenance activities comply with applicable statutory requirements, including the Mineral and Mining (Health, Safety and Technical) Regulations, LI 2182.
  • Participate actively in workplace inspections, safety audits, toolbox meetings, and risk assessments.
  • Identify hazards, assess risks, and implement appropriate control measures.
  • Provide technical guidance on the safe operation and maintenance of electrical infrastructure and equipment.
  • Take personal responsibility for workplace health and safety and encourage a strong safety culture among colleagues and contractors.
  • Promote safe work practices within and beyond the maintenance team.

Communication and Information Management

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date maintenance records and documentation.
  • Participate in shift handovers and team meetings to exchange critical operational and maintenance information.
  • Support the development and implementation of asset management and equipment reliability strategies.
  • Recommend maintenance improvements that enhance operational efficiency and equipment performance.
  • Collaborate effectively with operations, planning, engineering, and maintenance teams to resolve equipment issues and optimize plant performance.
  • Ensure timely communication of maintenance requirements, equipment status, and operational risks.

Qualifications

Educational and Professional Requirements

  • Electrical Engineering Technician II Certificate or equivalent qualification.
  • Post-trade qualifications in a relevant engineering or technical discipline will be highly advantageous.
  • Inspecting Engineer, Sectional Engineer Certificate of Competency, or MINCOM Certification is highly desirable.

Experience

  • Minimum of three (3) years of practical experience in electrical maintenance.
  • Proven experience in the installation, commissioning, inspection, maintenance, servicing, and repair of electrical equipment and systems within a large-scale mining, mineral processing, or heavy industrial environment.
  • Demonstrated experience working with extra-low voltage (ELV), low-voltage (LV), and high-voltage (HV) electrical systems.
  • Experience operating and maintaining Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs) will be a significant advantage.
  • Experience supporting reliability-centred maintenance and continuous improvement initiatives is desirable.

Knowledge Requirements

  • Strong understanding of mining or heavy industry maintenance principles, standards, and best practices.
  • Knowledge of industrial work management systems and maintenance processes.
  • Understanding of defect elimination methodologies and equipment reliability principles.
  • Knowledge of high-voltage electrical reticulation systems.
  • Strong understanding of process instrumentation and control systems.
  • Knowledge of maintenance planning and scheduling practices.
  • Familiarity with statutory health, safety, and environmental regulations applicable to the mining industry.
  • Working knowledge of Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS) and asset management systems.

Technical Skills

  • Ability to safely use hand tools, power tools, testing instruments, and workshop equipment.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting capabilities.
  • Ability to interpret electrical schematics, technical engineering drawings, specifications, standards, and maintenance manuals.
  • Proficiency in SAP, CMMS/ERP systems, and Microsoft Office applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Effective planning, organizing, prioritization, and time-management skills.
  • Strong document control and maintenance record management capabilities.
  • Knowledge of quality management principles and continuous improvement practices.

  • Electrical distribution networks.
  • Low-voltage and high-voltage motors.
  • Overhead power lines up to 34.5kV.
  • Transformers.
  • Power factor correction systems.
  • Electrical protection and monitoring relays.

Control and Instrumentation Systems

  • Distributed Control Systems (DCS).
  • Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems.
  • Control valves and positioners.
  • Actuators.
  • Transducers and transmitters.
  • Digital and analogue instrumentation devices.

Industrial Support Systems

  • Overhead cranes and hoisting systems.
  • Hydraulic systems.
  • Pneumatic systems.
