Job Purpose

UNFPA Ghana seeks an experienced Individual Consultant to lead a Maternal Morbidity Study. Ghana continues to face significant maternal health challenges, including high rates of severe maternal morbidity and maternal near-miss cases. This assignment will generate critical evidence to guide targeted interventions and strengthen national efforts to reduce maternal mortality and morbidity.


Key Responsibilities

The Consultant will:

  • Lead and conduct a comprehensive maternal morbidity burden study in Ghana
  • Design and guide the selection of a scientifically robust and globally accepted study methodology
  • Train technical data collection teams where required
  • Coordinate the Technical Working Group (TWG) on all aspects of the study, including data collection, analysis, and reporting
  • Oversee data management, analysis, and interpretation processes
  • Present findings and progress updates to key stakeholders and partners
  • Produce and submit a comprehensive final study report with actionable recommendations

Qualifications and Experience

Education:

  • Medical Degree (MB ChB or equivalent) is required
  • Postgraduate qualification in Public Health, Social Sciences, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Fetomaternal Medicine, or related fields is an advantage

Experience:

  • Minimum of 10 years’ experience in maternal health
  • Strong understanding of Ghana’s health system and maternal health landscape
  • Proven experience conducting public health research and managing complex health programmes
  • Experience facilitating stakeholder engagement and multi-sectoral collaboration
  • Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality analytical and technical reports
  • Strong public speaking, presentation, and communication skills

Languages:

  • Fluency in English is required
  • Knowledge of any local Ghanaian language is an advantage
