Position Summary

The Operations Manager will oversee and coordinate all operational activities across the Bank’s branches, ensuring efficiency, compliance, strong internal controls, and exceptional service delivery. The successful candidate will provide leadership in branch operations, cash management, transaction processing, risk management, and operational improvement initiatives while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and industry best practices.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership & Oversight

  • Lead and coordinate daily branch operations across all banking locations.
  • Ensure strict adherence to the Bank’s operational policies, procedures, and service standards.
  • Oversee teller operations, customer service activities, account administration, and transaction processing.
  • Monitor operational performance and implement measures to improve efficiency and service quality.
  • Drive operational consistency and excellence across all branches.

Cash Management & Treasury Operations

  • Manage branch cash holdings and liquidity levels in accordance with Bank of Ghana regulations and internal policies.
  • Oversee vault operations and cash custody procedures to ensure the security of bank assets.
  • Coordinate effective cash forecasting and cash flow management processes.
  • Monitor cash movements and implement controls to safeguard assets against loss, fraud, or misuse.
  • Ensure compliance with cash handling and treasury management requirements.

Transaction Processing & Clearing Operations

  • Oversee cheque clearing activities and ensure timely processing of transactions.
  • Supervise funds transfers, standing orders, direct debits, and electronic payment services.
  • Ensure the accurate and efficient processing of all customer transactions.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to resolve transaction-related issues promptly.
  • Monitor transaction processing standards to enhance customer experience and operational effectiveness.

Risk Management & Regulatory Compliance

  • Ensure full compliance with Bank of Ghana regulations, Anti-Money Laundering (AML) requirements, Know Your Customer (KYC) guidelines, and internal policies.
  • Monitor operational activities and transactions to identify, assess, and mitigate operational risks.
  • Conduct periodic operational reviews and internal control assessments.
  • Coordinate surprise cash counts, vault inspections, and custody audits.
  • Investigate operational irregularities and implement corrective actions to strengthen controls.
  • Support a culture of compliance, accountability, and ethical conduct throughout the Bank.

Process Improvement & Operational Excellence

  • Identify operational inefficiencies and recommend practical process improvements.
  • Lead initiatives aimed at enhancing productivity, service quality, and customer satisfaction.
  • Monitor performance against established Service Level Agreements (SLAs) and operational targets.
  • Support the implementation of technology-driven solutions and operational system enhancements.
  • Promote continuous improvement and operational best practices across all branches.

Team Leadership & Staff Development

  • Lead, supervise, coach, and mentor operations personnel across the Bank.
  • Monitor employee performance and provide regular feedback to drive continuous improvement.
  • Identify training needs and facilitate staff development initiatives.
  • Foster a culture of teamwork, accountability, professionalism, and customer service excellence.
  • Build a high-performing operations team capable of supporting the Bank’s strategic objectives.

Financial Control & Reconciliation

  • Collaborate with the Finance Department to oversee account reconciliations and exception management processes.
  • Ensure all operational transactions are accurately recorded, verified, and reconciled.
  • Investigate discrepancies and ensure timely resolution of outstanding issues.
  • Support financial control processes, internal audits, and regulatory reviews.
  • Strengthen operational controls to maintain financial accuracy and integrity.

Reporting & Management Information

  • Prepare and submit weekly, monthly, and periodic operational reports.
  • Analyze operational data and provide actionable recommendations to management.
  • Monitor key performance indicators (KPIs) and operational metrics.
  • Present operational performance updates and improvement initiatives to senior management.
  • Support strategic decision-making through accurate and timely operational reporting.

Qualifications and Experience

Educational Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Banking and Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, Economics, Commerce, or a related discipline from a recognized institution.

Professional Qualifications (Highly Desirable)

  • Chartered Institute of Bankers (CIB Ghana)
  • ACCA
  • CPA
  • ICA Ghana
  • Diploma in Banking
  • Other relevant professional certifications

Experience

  • Minimum of ten (10) years’ relevant banking experience.
  • At least three (3) years in an operations management, supervisory, or branch operations leadership role.
  • Experience within a Rural Bank, Community Bank, Savings and Loans Company, Microfinance Institution, or Commercial Bank will be an advantage.
  • Proven experience in managing banking operations, internal controls, and regulatory compliance frameworks.

Required Knowledge and Technical Skills

The successful candidate should possess:

  • Strong understanding of banking operations and branch management.
  • In-depth knowledge of Bank of Ghana regulations and prudential guidelines.
  • Sound understanding of AML, KYC, fraud prevention, and operational risk management practices.
  • Practical experience using core banking systems, particularly Temenos T24.
  • Strong knowledge of cash management and treasury operations.
  • Experience in account reconciliation and operational control processes.
  • Familiarity with electronic payment systems and banking technologies.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, particularly Microsoft Excel.
  • Knowledge of accounting systems and financial management processes.

  • Previous experience in rural or community banking environments.
