Role Purpose

The Principal, Tailings – Iduapriem provides strategic and technical leadership for the safe management, governance, and continuous improvement of Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs) and associated geotechnical structures. The role is responsible for ensuring compliance with global standards, supporting operational excellence, leading technical assurance activities, and driving long-term tailings strategies that align with AngloGold Ashanti’s business objectives and sustainability commitments.

Key Responsibilities

Safety, Governance & Compliance

• Champion AngloGold Ashanti’s Safety Vision and Values by promoting a culture where safety remains the highest priority.
• Support incident and accident investigations and implement corrective actions to strengthen operational safety and risk management.
• Lead the governance of tailings and sediment disposal facilities, including filtered tailings stacks, sediment retention dams, and Tailings Storage Facilities (TSFs).
• Establish effective governance processes and structured reporting frameworks for senior leadership.
• Maintain strong engagement with the Engineer of Record (EoR), Independent Tailings Review Board (ITRB), and Second Line of Defence to ensure robust technical oversight.
• Ensure full compliance with the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), corporate governance requirements, and applicable regulatory obligations.

Technical Leadership

• Provide technical leadership throughout the entire lifecycle of tailings assets, including planning, design, construction, operation, monitoring, remediation, expansion, and closure.
• Develop, implement, and continuously improve operational procedures for geotechnical structures to ensure safe and efficient operations.
• Lead the implementation of engineering controls that support the safe operation, monitoring, remediation, and expansion of tailings facilities.
• Ensure engineering activities comply with approved design criteria, technical standards, and industry best practices.

Operational Support

• Conduct quarterly inspections of all Tailings Storage Facilities to support due diligence, operational integrity, and compliance.
• Participate in annual Chief Technical Officer (CTO) Tailings Storage Facility audits and oversee the implementation of corrective actions.
• Provide technical leadership and guidance to site management on all operational aspects of TSF management.
• Support General Managers in evaluating operational priorities, managing tailings budgets, and implementing remediation initiatives where required.
• Resolve technical issues and implement sustainable engineering solutions that minimise operational risk.

Strategic Planning & Projects

• Provide technical input into Life of Mine (LOM) planning, including tailings strategy, capacity management, infrastructure expansion, and closure planning.
• Participate in multidisciplinary engineering studies supporting new and existing Tailings Storage Facility projects.
• Review and optimise tailings facility designs across Concept, Pre-Feasibility (PFS), Feasibility (FS), and Detailed Design phases.
• Apply value engineering principles to improve constructability, optimise capital and operating costs, and enhance long-term asset performance.
• Contribute technical expertise to AngloGold Ashanti’s strategic business planning and capital investment decisions.

Continuous Improvement & Capability Development

• Conduct technical assessments and benchmarking exercises to identify opportunities for operational excellence and cost optimisation.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives across tailings management systems and engineering practices.
• Support workforce planning and provide technical input into AngloGold Ashanti’s strategic tailings and geotechnical capability development.
• Coach, mentor, and develop an effective, high-performing Tailings Operations team that supports operational excellence and succession planning.

Qualifications, Experience & Competencies

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related engineering discipline.
• A postgraduate qualification in Geotechnical Engineering or a related field will be an advantage.

Experience

• Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience in tailings engineering, geotechnical engineering, or related mining infrastructure.
• Demonstrated experience designing, reviewing, and optimising Tailings Storage Facilities, saddle dams, buttresses, drainage systems, and associated infrastructure across Concept, PFS, FS, and Detailed Design phases.
• Strong experience implementing the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) and international tailings governance frameworks.
• Sound knowledge of international industry standards and guidelines, including CDA, NBR, MAC, ANCOLD, and ICOLD.
• Proven experience establishing technical governance frameworks and ensuring engineering compliance throughout project delivery.
• Demonstrated success delivering value engineering initiatives that improve project cost, schedule, constructability, and operational performance.
• Strong understanding of geotechnical risk assessment, dam stability, seepage management, and tailings safety principles.
• Proven ability to analyse complex engineering data, evaluate technical risks, challenge design assumptions, and make informed engineering decisions.
