Role Overview
We are looking for a seasoned HSE professional who will provide leadership, technical guidance, and oversight to underground safety operations. The ideal candidate will play a key role in risk management, incident prevention, and continuous improvement of health and safety systems.
Key Responsibilities
- Support daily underground HSE activities and provide technical guidance to ensure effective implementation of the Health and Safety Management System.
- Conduct workplace inspections, compliance audits, risk assessments, and safety evaluations to identify hazards and support corrective actions.
- Monitor and enforce adherence to safe work procedures and statutory requirements, promoting a strong safety culture focused on injury prevention and environmental protection.
- Escalate any unsafe conditions or imminent hazards to supervisors, unit managers, and HSE leadership without delay.
- Support the identification of critical controls and assist in implementing risk reduction and incident prevention measures.
- Ensure employees and contractors receive adequate safety inductions, information, and ongoing safety awareness training.
- Facilitate toolbox talks, safety meetings, and safety engagement sessions for employees and contractors.
- Support the implementation of the site Emergency Response Plan and coordinate closely with the Mine Rescue Team during emergency situations.
- Deliver underground safety inductions and assist with basic safety training programs for workforce development.
- Prepare and submit accurate weekly and monthly HSE reports to the Senior Safety Officer, highlighting performance trends and risk areas.
- Maintain equipment inspection registers and schedules to ensure compliance, reliability, and fitness for purpose.
- Conduct regular underground safety walks and inspections to provide visible safety leadership and ensure compliance with standards.
- Review PPE standards and usage, ensuring proper selection, condition, and compliance at all times.
- Perform other related duties as assigned to support the achievement of HSE objectives.
Education, Experience & Key Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, Science, or a related technical field.
- Minimum of 2 years’ experience as a Safety Officer in mining, construction, or a similar industrial environment, including at least 2 years in underground mining operations.
- NEBOSH International General Certificate (IGC) in Occupational Health and Safety (mandatory).
- Valid Minerals Commission HSE Officer Certificate of Competency.
- Valid Ghanaian Class C Driver’s License.
- Strong understanding of Ghanaian mining health and safety legislation, including Minerals and Mining (Health, Safety and Technical) Regulations, 2012 (L.I. 2182).
- Solid knowledge of Health and Safety Management Systems and their application in underground mining environments.
- Strong background in risk management and loss prevention practices.
- Practical experience with underground mining operations and associated hazards.
- Strong conflict resolution skills with the ability to manage issues professionally and constructively.
- Excellent organizational and planning skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate safety records and reports.
