Role Overview
The SHSESG Manager will lead the development and execution of integrated safety, health, environmental, social, security, and governance strategies across mining operations. The role requires a strategic leader who can drive compliance, strengthen risk management systems, and foster a culture of safety, sustainability, and accountability throughout the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Safety & Health Leadership
- Develop, implement, and continuously improve the Mine Safety & Health Management System.
- Ensure full compliance with statutory mining health and safety regulations, including L.I. 2182.
- Lead hazard identification, risk assessments, and critical control management processes.
- Oversee incident investigations, root cause analysis, and implementation of corrective actions.
- Drive safety culture initiatives and behavioral safety programs across the workforce.
- Ensure strict safety compliance for contractors and site visitors.
Environmental Management
- Lead compliance with environmental regulations, including EPA permits, ESMPs, and mine closure plans.
- Oversee environmental monitoring activities (air, water, noise, tailings, and waste).
- Ensure alignment with ISO 14001 Environmental Management System standards.
- Manage environmental incidents, audits, and regulatory inspections.
- Drive biodiversity protection, land reclamation, and closure readiness strategies.
Security Management
- Develop and implement site-wide security strategies and risk assessments.
- Ensure compliance with the Voluntary Principles on Security and Human Rights (VPSHR).
- Oversee private security providers and manage access control systems.
- Coordinate emergency preparedness, crisis management, and response plans.
- Safeguard company assets and manage community-security interfaces.
Social Performance & Community Relations
- Lead stakeholder engagement, community mapping, and grievance management systems.
- Ensure effective implementation of Community Development Agreements (CDAs).
- Oversee resettlement, livelihood restoration, and social impact mitigation programs.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with traditional authorities, regulators, and local communities.
- Manage social impact assessments and reporting processes.
ESG & Governance
- Develop and implement the company’s ESG strategy and reporting framework.
- Ensure alignment with international standards and frameworks, including ICMC Code and GRI Standards.
- Oversee ESG data management, reporting accuracy, and disclosures.
- Promote ethical conduct, compliance, and strong governance practices.
- Support corporate audits and engage with external ESG rating agencies.
Leadership & Management
- Lead and manage multidisciplinary SHSESG teams with clear performance targets.
- Develop budgets, resource plans, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Coach, mentor, and build capacity within the SHSESG function.
- Act as a key advisor to senior management on risk, compliance, and sustainability matters.
- Engage with regulators, auditors, NGOs, and investors as required.
Qualifications and Experience
Academic Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Health, Safety, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field (minimum requirement).
- Master’s degree in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Management, Sustainability, or an MBA is preferred.
Professional Certifications (Highly Desirable)
- NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
- ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 Lead Auditor certifications.
- Membership in professional bodies such as IOSH, IEMA, or AusIMM.
- EPA or relevant statutory environmental accreditation.
- Minerals Commission certification in Health, Safety, and Environment Management.
- VPSHR and ESG-related certifications.
Experience Requirements
- 10–15+ years of experience in mining or heavy industry.
- Minimum of 5 years in a senior SHSE/ESG leadership role.
- Proven experience in regulatory engagement, compliance audits, and stakeholder management.
- Demonstrated experience managing contractors, communities, and regulatory bodies.
