Position Summary
The Technical Manager (Mortuary) will be responsible for the efficient operation of the Mortuary Department, ensuring the effective management of facilities, personnel, equipment, resources, and service delivery. The role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and administrative competence to maintain high professional standards while ensuring compliance with relevant laws, regulations, and hospital policies.
Key Responsibilities
- Manage and oversee the day-to-day operations of the Mortuary Department.
- Ensure effective systems are in place for the receipt, storage, identification, and release of adult and pediatric deceased persons.
- Coordinate and oversee post-mortem and mortuary-related activities.
- Supervise mortuary staff, autopsy clerks, and other personnel to ensure efficient service delivery and adherence to professional standards.
- Develop and manage staff schedules, duty rosters, leave plans, and workforce coverage to support continuous 24-hour, 7-day service delivery.
- Liaise with service users, pathologists, clinicians, technical staff, and senior management on matters relating to mortuary operations and service delivery.
- Provide technical and administrative advice to the Lead Consultant Pathologist and senior management on mortuary operations, staffing, storage capacity, and service improvements.
- Ensure compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), quality management systems, health and safety requirements, confidentiality standards, data protection regulations, and hospital policies.
- Monitor departmental expenditure and resource utilization to achieve financial and operational targets.
- Ensure all statutory, departmental, and hospital records are accurately maintained and updated.
- Manage information requests from authorized institutions, including insurance companies and investigative bodies, through approved channels.
- Oversee equipment management, maintenance schedules, and asset records to ensure operational readiness.
- Promote a culture of safety and ensure strict adherence to health, safety, and infection prevention protocols.
- Investigate and report accidents, incidents, and operational risks for appropriate action.
- Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, research activities, and service development programs.
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor of Science (BSc) Degree in Biomedical Science, Medical Laboratory Science, or a related field.
- Master’s Degree (or equivalent postgraduate qualification) in a relevant specialty.
Qualification & Experience
- Must be in good standing with the Allied Health Professions Council or another relevant regulatory body.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of relevant professional experience in a related field.
- Demonstrated leadership and management experience within a healthcare or related environment.
- Evidence of continuous professional development and management training will be an added advantage.
- Knowledge and experience in mortuary management, funeral home management, or autopsy assistance will be an advantage.
- Strong understanding of Ghana’s Coroner System and relevant legislation, including:
- Anatomy Act
- Births and Deaths Registration Laws
- Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Act
- Data Protection Act
- Experience in quality assurance, compliance management, and operational governance.
- Experience working within multidisciplinary healthcare teams.
- Proven supervisory and team leadership experience.
- Ability to complete at least one full term in office before retirement.
