Position Summary
The Field Service / Onsite Service Technician will provide expert field-based technical support, diagnostics, maintenance, repair, and overhaul services for power generation equipment and engine systems at customer locations. The successful candidate will serve as a trusted technical advisor, ensuring equipment reliability, minimizing downtime, and delivering exceptional service experiences while maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Service Delivery
The successful candidate will:
- Perform advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, repairs, overhauls, and rebuilds on complex engine and power generation equipment at customer sites.
- Restore equipment to optimal operating condition while minimizing downtime and maximizing operational availability.
- Conduct preventative maintenance activities in accordance with manufacturer specifications and company standards.
- Execute repairs safely, accurately, and efficiently using approved procedures, specialized tools, and technical documentation.
- Validate repair effectiveness through testing, inspections, and performance verification activities.
- Analyze complex electrical, mechanical, and control system issues and implement effective corrective actions.
Customer Support & Relationship Management
- Serve as the primary technical contact for customers during onsite service activities.
- Build and maintain strong customer relationships through responsive, professional, and solution-oriented service delivery.
- Communicate technical findings, repair recommendations, and maintenance requirements clearly and effectively.
- Deliver a positive customer experience while reinforcing confidence in Cummins’ products and service capabilities.
Diagnostics & Troubleshooting
- Translate customer-reported issues into structured troubleshooting and diagnostic plans.
- Utilize electronic diagnostic tools, service software, and specialized testing equipment to identify root causes of equipment failures.
- Interpret technical data, diagnostic results, service publications, and OEM documentation to support accurate fault diagnosis.
- Escalate unresolved technical issues to product specialists or supervisors and collaborate on effective resolutions.
Documentation & Compliance
- Complete service reports, timesheets, maintenance records, warranty claims, and quality documentation accurately and on time.
- Maintain complete and traceable service records in accordance with company policies and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure compliance with all quality assurance, technical, and operational standards.
- Follow established service workflows and reporting procedures.
Leadership & Team Support
- Provide technical guidance and support to technicians, apprentices, and junior team members.
- Share knowledge, best practices, and troubleshooting expertise to strengthen team capability.
- Review repair plans and provide coaching to improve technical performance and service quality.
- Support a culture of continuous learning, collaboration, and operational excellence.
Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance
- Adhere to all Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Promote safe work practices and proactively identify potential hazards.
- Ensure service vehicles, tools, testing equipment, and work areas are maintained in safe and operational condition.
- Contribute to a culture of safety excellence and environmental responsibility.
Business Development Support
- Identify potential service, maintenance, upgrade, and sales opportunities during customer engagements.
- Communicate identified opportunities to the appropriate commercial or service teams.
- Support efforts to strengthen customer loyalty and long-term service relationships.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
- Qualified Power Generation Technician with an Electrical Certificate or equivalent technical qualification.
Experience
- Extensive experience in power generation, field service, engine maintenance, or related technical service environments.
- Demonstrated success diagnosing and repairing complex electrical, mechanical, and control systems.
- Proven ability to perform first-time-right repairs that minimize equipment downtime and improve customer satisfaction.
- Experience working in customer-facing field service environments.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
The ideal candidate should possess:
Power Generation Expertise
- Strong understanding of power generation systems, engines, alternators, and associated control systems.
- Advanced knowledge of generator paralleling and synchronization systems.
- Experience working with generator protection systems and power management controls.
Diagnostics & Troubleshooting
- Advanced fault-finding and diagnostic capabilities.
- Ability to use guided troubleshooting workflows and technical service procedures effectively.
- Proficiency in interpreting electrical schematics, technical drawings, service manuals, and OEM documentation.
Electronic Service Tools
- Proficiency in the use of electronic diagnostic tools, service software, and computerized maintenance systems.
- Ability to analyze diagnostic outputs and determine effective corrective actions.
Electrical & Mechanical Systems
- In-depth understanding of complex electrical and mechanical systems and their interactions.
- Strong knowledge of engine systems, control systems, power distribution equipment, and protection systems.
Safety & Compliance
- Strong commitment to Health, Safety, and Environmental standards.
- Consistent application of safe work practices in high-risk operational environments.
Additional Requirements
- Certified and competent to work on Medium Voltage (MV) and High Voltage (HV) systems.
- Ability and willingness to travel domestically and internationally as required.
- Valid certification, permits, or authorizations required for electrical and field service work.
- Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities in demanding operational environments.
