Position Purpose
The Geotechnical Engineer will support the planning, monitoring, and management of geotechnical activities across mining operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for conducting geotechnical investigations, analyzing ground conditions, monitoring slope performance, identifying geotechnical risks, and ensuring compliance with approved engineering designs and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
Geotechnical Monitoring and Analysis
- Conduct geotechnical rockface mapping using ShapeMetriX technology and analyze collected geotechnical data to support operational decision-making.
- Perform routine inspections of open pits, waste dumps, and associated mining infrastructure to identify and assess geotechnical risks.
- Monitor groundwater conditions and maintain geotechnical instrumentation, including Vibrating Wire Piezometers (VWP).
- Analyze geotechnical data and prepare technical reports, recommendations, and presentations for operational teams and management.
- Support the development and continuous improvement of geotechnical monitoring programs.
Slope Stability and Risk Management
- Generate, maintain, and update geotechnical hazard plans in accordance with Gold Fields’ risk management standards and procedures.
- Assess slope performance and identify potential instability risks, recommending appropriate mitigation measures.
- Conduct reconciliation of design parameters against as-built mining configurations to ensure compliance with approved slope designs and engineering standards.
- Participate in geotechnical risk assessments and contribute to the implementation of effective control measures.
- Ensure geotechnical activities comply with applicable mining regulations, industry standards, and company requirements.
Monitoring Systems and Operational Support
- Support slope stability and waste dump monitoring activities using radar-based monitoring systems and berm monitoring technologies.
- Maintain accurate geotechnical records and databases to support operational planning and reporting.
- Collaborate with mine planning, operations, geology, and technical services teams to provide geotechnical input for mining activities.
- Assist in evaluating ground conditions and providing recommendations that enhance operational safety and efficiency.
Stakeholder Engagement and Communication
- Liaise effectively with sectional supervisors and operational teams to ensure timely communication of geotechnical information and recommendations.
- Provide technical support and guidance on geotechnical matters to relevant stakeholders.
- Contribute to safety meetings, technical reviews, and operational planning discussions.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing geotechnical performance and risk management.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent tertiary qualification in Geological Engineering, Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline from a recognized institution.
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience within a mining, geotechnical, or engineering environment.
- Experience in open-pit mining geotechnics and slope stability management will be an advantage.
- Possession of a valid MINCOM Competency Certificate.
- Valid Ghanaian driver’s licence.
Knowledge, Skills and Competencies
Technical Competencies
- Strong understanding of geotechnical engineering principles and mining geomechanics.
- Sound knowledge of slope monitoring systems, particularly radar-based monitoring technologies.
- Proficiency in geotechnical analysis software, including DIPS, SLIDE2, RS2, and ROCSLOPE2.
- Working knowledge of Surpac and Microsoft Office applications.
- Experience in groundwater monitoring and geotechnical instrumentation, including Vibrating Wire Piezometers (VWP).
- Knowledge of relevant geotechnical standards, mining regulations, methodologies, and procedures.
