Role Overview

The Head of Unit – Underwriting will lead the underwriting function and drive profitability, portfolio quality, and sustainable growth. The role requires strategic oversight, strong technical underwriting expertise, and the ability to lead high-performing teams within a competitive insurance environment.

The successful candidate will strengthen underwriting standards, enhance risk assessment frameworks, and drive expansion within the non-motor insurance portfolio.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the underwriting unit to achieve revenue and profitability targets.

  • Develop and implement underwriting strategies aligned with corporate objectives.

  • Evaluate, approve, and manage complex risks in line with underwriting guidelines and risk appetite.

  • Drive business development initiatives to grow and diversify the non-motor insurance portfolio.

  • Monitor portfolio performance and implement corrective actions to maintain profitability.

  • Collaborate closely with sales and business development teams to expand market share.

  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, internal controls, and governance standards.

  • Provide leadership, mentorship, and professional development to underwriting staff.

  • Maintain strong relationships with brokers, reinsurers, and key stakeholders.


Qualifications and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Insurance, Risk Management, Business Administration, Finance, or a related field.

  • Professional insurance qualification such as ACII, DipCII, or equivalent will be an advantage.

  • Minimum of 10–15 years’ relevant underwriting experience, with at least 5 years in a managerial role.

  • Strong technical knowledge of underwriting principles, risk assessment, and portfolio management.

  • Proven experience in business development, sales, and portfolio growth, preferably within non-motor insurance.

  • Excellent leadership, communication, analytical, and decision-making skills.
