About the School
The University of Ghana Basic School was established in 1955 as the University Primary School (UPS) with an initial enrolment of 36 pupils. In 1958, it relocated to its current premises as the Demonstration School, and in 1987, the Junior Secondary School was introduced with 68 students.
Today, the School serves over 2,000 pupils across three departments: Kindergarten, Primary, and Junior High School, and remains a key educational institution within the University of Ghana community.

The Role
The University of Ghana invites applications for the position of Head, University of Ghana Basic School. Reporting to the Registrar and the School Management Committee, the Head will provide strategic leadership for the administration, development, and continuous growth of the School in a competitive national education environment.
As a self-financing and self-accounting unit of the University, the Head will be responsible for income generation, prudent financial management, and ensuring sustainable operations while advancing academic excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Administration
- Provide overall leadership for the School, ensuring efficiency, discipline, and high standards of conduct.
- Manage human, financial, and material resources in line with University policies.
- Lead strategic planning, monitoring, and evaluation of school programmes and performance.
- Drive infrastructure development and institutional growth.
Academic Leadership & Quality Assurance
- Ensure effective implementation of the Ghana Education Service (GES) curriculum at all levels.
- Supervise lesson planning, instructional delivery, assessment, and evaluation.
- Implement targeted academic interventions to improve learner outcomes.
- Establish systems to monitor teacher performance and student progress.
- Integrate technology to enhance teaching, learning, and assessment management.
Staff Management & Development
• Provide strategic direction to teaching and non-teaching staff.
• Promote mentorship, training, and continuous professional development.
• Encourage the use of digital tools for instruction and administration.
• Foster a culture of accountability, motivation, professionalism, and teamwork.
School Development & Operations
• Uphold standards of discipline, safety, and student welfare.
• Promote innovation and the adoption of digital solutions in school administration.
• Build strong internal and external partnerships to support institutional advancement.
• Ensure sound financial management and sustainable revenue generation.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must possess:
- A strong first degree and a professional qualification in Education.
- A Master’s degree (M.Ed, M.Phil or equivalent) in a relevant field such as Educational Administration, Educational Leadership, or Educational Management.
- At least 15 years of progressive experience in education, with a minimum of five (5) years in a senior leadership role (e.g., Head of School, Deputy Head, or equivalent),
OR - Be at the rank of Assistant Director II or higher in the Ghana Education Service, with a minimum of 15 years’ professional experience.

Tenure
The appointment is for an initial four (4) year term, subject to terms approved by the University Council, and may be renewed for one additional term of up to four years, provided the appointee does not exceed the statutory retirement age of 60.
