About the Organization

The African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat supports the implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), one of the most ambitious integration initiatives of the African Union. The Secretariat coordinates activities that promote trade, economic integration, and cooperation among African countries.

Based in Accra, Ghana, the Secretariat works with Member States, institutions, and partners to advance intra-African trade and support economic development across the continent.


Internship Overview

The African Continental Free Trade Area Secretariat invites applications for its Translator/Interpreter Internship Program. The program provides students with the opportunity to gain practical experience in an international and multicultural environment while contributing to the work of a major continental initiative.


Internship Objectives

The program aims to:

  • Provide students with practical exposure to the work of the AfCFTA Secretariat.

  • Offer a learning platform for qualified students to gain professional experience.

  • Allow interns to experience first-hand the work of one of the African Union’s most ambitious projects.

  • Promote awareness of the AfCFTA among young people and encourage future careers in international organizations.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in translating official documents from English to French and/or other African Union working languages.

  • Support interpretation during meetings, discussions, and official engagements.

  • Ensure accurate and timely translation of documents covering a variety of subject areas.

  • Support the language services team in maintaining high-quality translation and interpretation standards.

  • Contribute to the effective communication of the Secretariat’s activities across languages.


Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must meet the following criteria:

  • Must be a national of a Member State of the African Union and residing in Ghana.

  • Must be a final-year student enrolled full-time in a fully accredited degree program in Interpretation and/or Translation at a recognized institution.

  • Must be available full-time for a minimum period of three months.

  • Must demonstrate proficiency in one official working language of the African Union (English, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Kiswahili, or Spanish).

  • Fluency in an additional AU working language will be considered an advantage.

  • Must possess strong quantitative and IT skills.

  • Must have good ICT skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Must be capable of working in a multicultural and international team environment.

  • Must demonstrate commitment to upholding the values and rules of the Secretariat during the internship period.

Selection Process

The selection process will include the following stages:

  1. Pre-screening: Applications will be reviewed and shortlisted candidates will be shared with relevant directorates.

  2. Interview and/or Written Test: Selected candidates may be invited for a telephone interview and/or written assessment.

  3. Offer Letter: Successful candidates will receive an official internship offer from the Administration and Human Resources Directorate.

Shortlisted candidates may be required to provide verifiable references.


Terms and Conditions

  • The internship is unpaid.

  • Interns are responsible for their travel arrangements, accommodation, and living expenses.

  • No travel compensation will be provided by the Secretariat.

  • The internship is authorized for up to six months, renewable once based on business needs.

  • Interns may have the opportunity to rotate across departments depending on organizational requirements.
