Job Summary

We are seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Mine Planning (Africa) to lead mine planning activities across our operations. The successful candidate will drive excellence in mine design, scheduling, resource management, and technical leadership while collaborating with senior stakeholders to optimize operational performance and business value.


Key Responsibilities

  • Lead regional mine planning for open pit and/or underground operations, including design, scheduling, and business planning
  • Oversee resource-to-reserve conversion and ensure compliance with Mineral Reserves and Mineral Resource (MRMR) standards
  • Optimize mine design and scheduling using Deswik, MineSight, and other engineering software
  • Drive operational improvements through mine automation, technology adoption, and business process enhancement
  • Supervise, mentor, and develop technical staff within the mine engineering team
  • Ensure mine planning incorporates safety, cost, and operational value drivers
  • Communicate complex technical concepts effectively to non-technical leadership and stakeholders
  • Monitor and report on compliance with functional cost models, standards, and best practices
  • Contribute to project evaluation, investment analysis, and M&A due diligence activities
  • Collaborate across sites to ensure consistent application of mine planning best practices

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Degree-qualified Mining Engineer; advanced degree preferred
  • Recognized Competent / Qualified Person for Mineral Reserves and Mineral Resource (MRMR)
  • 15–20 years of combined mine engineering and operations experience in open pit and/or underground hard rock gold or copper-gold operations
  • Substantial experience in senior mine management roles, including supervision of engineering staff and leadership of technical services teams
  • Demonstrated expertise in both bulk and selective mining methods, with experience on oxide Au and Cu/Au ore bodies
  • Working knowledge of mine automation, scheduling optimization, and engineering software (Deswik, MineSight)
  • Strong knowledge of safety in design, functional cost modeling, and standards compliance
  • Experience with project evaluation, Newmont’s Investment System, and M&A due diligence
  • Excellent leadership, collaboration, and communication skills, including the ability to convey technical concepts to non-technical audiences
  • Proficiency in English required; additional Ghanaian language skills are an asset
