Position Summary
The Laboratory Technologist/Technician will support the effective operation of laboratory facilities by ensuring the proper management of equipment, specimens, materials, and laboratory processes. The successful candidate will contribute to teaching, research, and practical training activities while maintaining high standards of safety, quality, and regulatory compliance.
This role requires strong technical expertise, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively within multiple tissue-related laboratory environments.
Key Responsibilities
Laboratory Operations & Technical Support
- Support the day-to-day operation of laboratory facilities and ensure laboratories remain fully functional and organized.
- Prepare laboratory materials, equipment, reagents, and specimens for teaching, research, and practical sessions.
- Assist faculty members, researchers, and students during laboratory activities and demonstrations.
- Operate, maintain, and monitor laboratory equipment to ensure optimal performance and reliability.
- Ensure proper handling, preservation, and storage of biological samples, tissues, and laboratory materials.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Maintain compliance with laboratory quality standards, institutional policies, and regulatory requirements.
- Implement and monitor laboratory safety procedures and best practices.
- Ensure adherence to biosafety, infection prevention, and environmental health standards.
- Participate in quality assurance initiatives, audits, inspections, and accreditation activities.
Equipment & Inventory Management
- Monitor laboratory equipment performance and coordinate servicing, calibration, and maintenance activities.
- Maintain accurate inventory records for laboratory supplies, chemicals, reagents, and consumables.
- Identify supply needs and support procurement processes to ensure uninterrupted laboratory operations.
- Ensure proper storage and handling of laboratory materials and equipment.
Records Management & Documentation
- Maintain accurate laboratory records, reports, and documentation.
- Support data collection, analysis, and reporting activities as required.
- Ensure laboratory records are properly filed, secured, and readily accessible when needed.
- Assist in preparing operational and technical reports.
Research & Academic Support
- Support academic research projects and laboratory-based investigations.
- Assist with specimen preparation, data collection, and laboratory procedures related to research activities.
- Provide technical guidance to students during practical sessions where appropriate.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing laboratory efficiency and service delivery.
Health, Safety & Environmental Management
- Ensure laboratories operate in a safe and secure manner at all times.
- Promote compliance with health, safety, and environmental management procedures.
- Report laboratory incidents, hazards, equipment malfunctions, and safety concerns promptly.
- Ensure the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety devices.
Qualifications & Experience
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in:
- Medical Laboratory Science
- Biotechnology
- Biological Sciences
- Biomedical Sciences
- Or a related discipline from a recognized tertiary institution.
- A Master’s Degree in a relevant field will be an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional experience in a laboratory, research, healthcare, academic, or scientific environment.
- Demonstrated experience working within multiple tissue-related laboratory facilities.
- Experience supporting teaching, research, or laboratory operations within a higher education institution will be an advantage.
