Position Summary
The Curator / Academic Mortuary Manager will be responsible for managing the University’s academic mortuary and associated tissue-related facilities, ensuring compliance with professional, ethical, health, safety, and regulatory standards. The successful candidate will support teaching, research, and practical training activities while maintaining the highest standards of operational excellence, documentation, and facility management.
This role requires a strong scientific background, sound technical knowledge, and the ability to work effectively within a sensitive academic and laboratory environment.
Key Responsibilities
Academic Mortuary & Facility Management
- Manage the day-to-day operations of the academic mortuary and related laboratory facilities.
- Ensure proper handling, preservation, storage, and documentation of cadavers, tissue specimens, and related materials in accordance with established protocols.
- Maintain a safe, secure, and professionally managed environment that supports teaching, research, and training activities.
- Coordinate facility usage schedules and support academic departments utilizing the facility.
Laboratory Operations & Technical Support
- Oversee tissue-related laboratory operations and ensure adherence to approved procedures.
- Support faculty, researchers, and students during practical sessions and academic activities.
- Monitor the proper use, maintenance, calibration, and storage of laboratory equipment and materials.
- Assist in implementing best practices for specimen management and laboratory operations.
Health, Safety & Regulatory Compliance
- Ensure compliance with institutional policies, ethical guidelines, biosafety requirements, and relevant regulatory standards.
- Implement and monitor health, safety, infection prevention, and environmental control measures.
- Conduct routine inspections to identify and address operational risks and safety concerns.
- Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and adherence to safety procedures.
Records Management & Documentation
- Maintain accurate records relating to specimens, facility operations, inventory, and regulatory requirements.
- Ensure all documentation is complete, secure, and readily available for audits and inspections.
- Prepare periodic operational reports and updates for management.
- Maintain strict confidentiality in handling sensitive information and materials.
Inventory & Resource Management
- Monitor and manage laboratory and mortuary supplies, equipment, and consumables.
- Coordinate procurement requests and ensure adequate stock levels are maintained.
- Support budget planning and resource utilization within the facility.
- Ensure efficient management of assets and operational resources.
Training & Continuous Improvement
- Support training activities for students, laboratory personnel, and facility users.
- Promote compliance with operational procedures and best practices.
- Identify opportunities to improve facility operations, service delivery, and resource utilization.
- Participate in institutional quality assurance initiatives and accreditation processes.
Qualifications & Experience
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in:
- Medical Laboratory Science
- Biotechnology
- Biological Sciences
- Biomedical Sciences
- Or a related discipline from a recognized tertiary institution.
- A Master’s Degree in a relevant field will be an added advantage.
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years of relevant professional experience in a mortuary, pathology, anatomy laboratory, biomedical laboratory, research facility, medical school, or related environment.
- Demonstrated experience working within tissue-related laboratory facilities.
- Experience supporting academic, research, or health sciences environments will be highly advantageous.
