Position Purpose
The Section Operator I will support the safe and efficient operation of processing plant activities by preparing, handling, and transferring reagents in accordance with established operating procedures and safety standards. The role will contribute to maintaining continuous plant operations, ensuring process efficiency, and supporting production targets within the Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) process plant.
The successful candidate will demonstrate a strong commitment to safety, operational excellence, and teamwork while maintaining compliance with Gold Fields’ operational and environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
Plant Operations
- Prepare and transfer process reagents in accordance with approved operating procedures and production requirements.
- Monitor reagent preparation systems and ensure continuous availability of reagents for plant operations.
- Support the safe operation of the Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) process plant by maintaining reagent supply and handling activities.
- Conduct routine operational inspections and identify potential process or equipment issues.
- Report abnormalities, equipment malfunctions, or safety concerns promptly to supervisors.
- Assist in maintaining optimal process performance and operational efficiency.
Reagent Handling and Management
- Safely receive, store, prepare, and transfer reagents in compliance with standard operating procedures.
- Ensure accurate preparation and dosage of reagents to support metallurgical performance targets.
- Monitor reagent inventory levels and report replenishment requirements.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe reagent preparation and storage areas.
- Adhere to chemical handling procedures and environmental management requirements.
Safety, Health, and Environmental Compliance
- Comply with all Gold Fields safety policies, procedures, and operational guidelines.
- Use personal protective equipment (PPE) correctly and consistently.
- Participate actively in safety meetings, inspections, and risk assessments.
- Identify workplace hazards and implement appropriate control measures.
- Promote a zero-harm culture by adhering to health, safety, and environmental standards at all times.
- Report incidents, near misses, and unsafe conditions immediately.
Equipment Monitoring and Housekeeping
- Conduct routine inspections of reagent handling equipment and associated systems.
- Support basic equipment checks and report maintenance requirements promptly.
- Maintain high housekeeping standards within assigned operational areas.
- Ensure work areas remain clean, organized, and compliant with safety standards.
- Assist maintenance teams during planned shutdowns and operational activities when required.
Teamwork and Communication
- Work collaboratively with operators, supervisors, maintenance personnel, and other stakeholders.
- Communicate operational information accurately during shift handovers.
- Contribute to a positive and productive work environment.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives aimed at enhancing operational performance and safety.
Qualifications and Experience
Education
- Minimum of a Junior High School Certificate or equivalent qualification.
Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years’ experience in a similar operational role within a mining, processing plant, industrial, or manufacturing environment.
- Experience working with reagents and chemical handling processes will be an advantage.
- Exposure to mineral processing operations and plant environments is desirable.
Knowledge, Skills, and Competencies
Technical Knowledge
- Basic knowledge of reagent preparation and external reagent standard operating procedures.
- Understanding of Carbon-in-Leach (CIL) process plant operations, reagent preparation, and safe transfer procedures.
- Knowledge of safe chemical handling practices and workplace safety requirements.
- Ability to follow operational procedures accurately and consistently.
Skills
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively with people from diverse cultural and professional backgrounds.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to operational excellence.
- Ability to identify and report operational issues promptly.
- Good teamwork and interpersonal skills.
Additional Requirements
- A valid mobile equipment operating license will be an added advantage.
- Possession of a valid mine permit will be an added advantage.
