Key Responsibilities
- Provide strategic legal advice and professional opinions to the University Council, Management, and relevant Committees on legal matters affecting the University.
- Draft, review, negotiate, and manage contracts, agreements, memoranda of understanding, and other legal instruments on behalf of the University.
- Monitor compliance with applicable laws, regulations, statutes, and University policies, and recommend appropriate legal and regulatory actions where necessary.
- Represent the University or coordinate with external legal counsel in litigation, arbitration, mediation, and other dispute resolution proceedings.
- Advise on legal matters relating to intellectual property, procurement, employment law, land and property transactions, data protection, and other institutional legal matters.
- Maintain an accurate register of legal proceedings, contracts, and other legal documentation.
- Support the development, review, and implementation of University statutes, policies, regulations, and governance frameworks with legal implications.
- Liaise with the Ghana Bar Association, regulatory authorities, government agencies, and other external stakeholders on matters affecting the University.
- Provide legal guidance, advisory services, and capacity-building programmes for Management and staff to strengthen institutional compliance.
- Perform any other duties assigned by the Vice-Chancellor or the University Council.
Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:
- Have been appointed as a Legal Officer in an accredited university or a comparable institution and served for at least three (3) years in that grade; or
- Hold a Master of Laws (LLM) or a higher legal qualification in addition to being called to the Bar.
Applicants must also:
- Have a minimum of seven (7) years’ post-call legal practice with demonstrated experience in institutional or corporate legal advisory work.
- Be a member in good standing of the Ghana Bar Association.
- Demonstrate proven expertise in employment law, intellectual property, procurement regulations, and university governance, which will be an added advantage.
- Possess excellent legal research, drafting, analytical, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Demonstrate sound professional judgment, integrity, confidentiality, and the ability to manage complex legal matters effectively.
