Position Summary
As the Heavy Duty Driver Mechanic, you will perform mechanical servicing and repairs on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment while safely transporting machinery between the Tema Service Centre and client locations. You will play a critical role in ensuring equipment is maintained to the highest operational and safety standards before delivery to customers.
Key Responsibilities
Vehicle Maintenance and Repairs
You will:
- Perform routine servicing, including oil changes, filter replacements, greasing, lubrication, and belt adjustments on heavy-duty vehicles and equipment.
- Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic faults using diagnostic equipment and manual troubleshooting techniques.
- Repair and maintain engines, gearboxes, drive shafts, suspension systems, steering systems, and air brake systems.
- Service and repair hydraulic systems used in earthmoving equipment, including booms, buckets, lifting mechanisms, and related components.
- Carry out preventive maintenance to minimise equipment downtime and maximise operational efficiency.
- Ensure all repairs comply with manufacturer specifications and company quality standards.
Testing and Technical Support
You will:
- Assist the Servicing Team in Tema with the final assembly, fitment, inspection, and testing of heavy-duty equipment before customer delivery.
- Conduct road tests and operational testing to verify vehicle performance and safety.
- Provide technical feedback to the Servicing Team regarding recurring faults and opportunities for continuous improvement.
- Maintain detailed service histories, repair records, inspection reports, and maintenance documentation.
Transportation and Logistics
You will:
- Safely transport heavy-duty vehicles and machinery between the Tema Service Centre and client project sites.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections to ensure vehicles remain roadworthy and compliant with safety regulations.
- Observe all road traffic laws, company safety procedures, and operational guidelines during transportation activities.
- Report vehicle defects, accidents, or maintenance requirements promptly.
Health, Safety and Compliance
You will:
- Maintain a clean, safe, and organised work environment.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and follow all health and safety procedures.
- Ensure equipment is serviced and operated in accordance with manufacturer recommendations and company policies.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives that enhance service quality and operational performance.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate will have:
- A Higher National Diploma (HND) or Diploma in Automobile Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field; or
- An NVTI Grade I and II Certificate in Heavy Duty Vehicle Mechanics.
- A valid Ghanaian Class C, E, or F Driver’s Licence authorising the operation of heavy trucks and articulated vehicles.
- A minimum of five (5) years’ post-apprenticeship experience in a similar role combining heavy-duty driving and mechanical maintenance.
- Proven experience servicing and repairing heavy-duty vehicles and equipment from brands such as HOWO, Sitrak, Shantui, SANY, Mercedes-Benz, or similar manufacturers.
- Strong knowledge of heavy-duty engine systems, hydraulic systems, transmissions, suspension systems, and air brake systems.
- Experience using diagnostic equipment and interpreting technical manuals.
Skills and Competencies
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Strong technical expertise in engine diagnostics, gearbox overhauls, hydraulic repairs, welding, and fabrication.
- Excellent troubleshooting and analytical skills, including the ability to diagnose mechanical faults through observation and testing.
- Good understanding of preventive maintenance practices.
- Physical fitness to safely handle heavy tools and work in demanding industrial environments.
- Strong organisational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work independently while meeting deadlines.
- Good knowledge of Ghana’s road network, particularly industrial routes and transport corridors.
- Good communication and teamwork skills.
