The African Union was officially launched on 9 July 2002 in Durban, South Africa, following the transformation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU), which had served the continent since 1963. While the OAU focused largely on ending colonialism and apartheid, the AU was created to address contemporary challenges and opportunities facing Africa in the 21st century.

Today, the African Union works with governments, regional economic communities, international partners, civil society organizations, and the African diaspora to achieve the continent’s development goals.
