Position Summary
The Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist will provide professional anesthesia services as part of a multidisciplinary surgical team. The role involves comprehensive patient assessment, anesthesia planning, perioperative care, pain management, and close monitoring to ensure safe surgical outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
Pre-Anesthetic Care
- Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including history taking, physical examination, and review of laboratory and imaging results.
- Evaluate surgical risk using established classification systems (e.g., ASA classification).
- Request and interpret relevant investigations such as FBC, FBS, ECG, U&E, creatinine, and chest X-rays where necessary.
- Develop individualized anesthesia and pain management plans using multimodal approaches.
- Obtain informed consent for anesthesia and pain management procedures.
- Provide patient education and counselling on preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care.
Anesthesia Delivery and Intraoperative Care
- Prepare patients adequately for anesthesia in accordance with clinical protocols.
- Ensure all anesthetic medications, equipment, and consumables are available and functional prior to procedures.
- Administer anesthesia, sedation, and multimodal pain management under supervision.
- Monitor patients closely during surgical procedures to ensure safety and stability.
- Ensure anesthetic machines, monitors, suction systems, and airway equipment are checked and fully operational.
Postoperative Care
- Support patient recovery and monitor post-anesthesia status.
- Implement pain management plans and adjust care based on patient response.
- Document anesthetic care accurately and maintain proper clinical records.
- Participate in handover processes to ensure continuity of care.
Clinical & Team Responsibilities
- Collaborate with surgeons, anesthetists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals in a multidisciplinary environment.
- Respond effectively to emergencies and assist in critical care interventions, including airway management and resuscitation.
- Participate in continuous quality improvement initiatives within the department.
- Contribute to clinical audits, research, and professional development activities.
- Ensure compliance with hospital protocols, safety standards, and ethical guidelines.
Educational Requirements
- Registered General Nurse or Midwife with an Advanced Diploma or Degree in Anesthesia or equivalent qualification.
- Must be a registered member in good standing with the Medical and Dental Council or relevant regulatory body.
Qualification & Experience
- Minimum of three (3) years post-qualification clinical experience.
- Experience in emergency medicine and critical care procedures, including airway management (e.g., intubation), will be an added advantage.
- Strong knowledge of anesthesia principles, pharmacology, and perioperative care.
- Experience working in a multidisciplinary clinical environment.
- Evidence of clinical practice, research involvement, or continuing professional development will be an advantage.
