Job Summary

The Chief Operating Officer (COO) will provide strategic leadership across the organization’s operations, people, and business functions. Working closely with the Managing Director, the COO will translate corporate strategy into operational execution, strengthen organizational effectiveness, and ensure the business operates efficiently while maintaining compliance, strong governance, and a high-performance culture. The ideal candidate will have a strong foundation in Human Resources and Organizational Development combined with proven operational leadership experience.

Key Responsibilities

Operational Leadership

  • Translate the Managing Director’s strategic vision into actionable operational plans and measurable business objectives.
  • Design, implement, and continuously improve operational processes, systems, and workflows to enhance efficiency and scalability.
  • Oversee operational budgets, key performance indicators (KPIs), and resource allocation while reporting business performance to the Managing Director.
  • Drive collaboration across all departments, including Operations, Finance, Technology, Product, Sales, Customer Service, Compliance, and Risk Management.
  • Identify operational challenges and implement solutions that improve productivity and organizational performance.

People & Organizational Strategy

  • Lead the organization’s people strategy by designing effective organizational structures, reporting frameworks, and workforce plans.
  • Oversee the full employee lifecycle, including workforce planning, recruitment, onboarding, learning and development, succession planning, and employee retention.
  • Build and sustain a strong organizational culture aligned with the company’s mission and values.
  • Develop and implement performance management, compensation, and incentive frameworks that support business objectives.
  • Lead organizational change initiatives and ensure smooth transitions during periods of growth.
  • Ensure compliance with Ghana’s labour laws and oversee employee relations and HR policies.

Operations, Risk & Governance

  • Collaborate with Compliance, Risk, and Legal teams to ensure operational compliance with applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Establish and maintain strong internal controls, governance frameworks, and business continuity plans.
  • Promote operational excellence through effective risk management and continuous process improvement.

Leadership & Talent Development

  • Lead, mentor, and develop department heads and senior managers.
  • Build leadership capability and succession pipelines across the organization.
  • Foster a collaborative, accountable, inclusive, and performance-driven workplace.
  • Promote a culture of innovation, continuous learning, and operational excellence.

Strategic Partnership

  • Serve as a trusted advisor and strategic partner to the Managing Director.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, organizational development, and executive decision-making.
  • Support board reporting, investor presentations, and business performance reviews.
  • Represent the organization with regulators, strategic partners, and other external stakeholders when required.

Educational & Experience Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Organizational Psychology, or a related field.
  • MBA and/or professional HR certification (such as SHRM, CIPD, or IHRMP Ghana) will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 5 years’ progressive leadership experience, including senior management or department-head responsibilities.
  • Strong background in Human Resources, People Operations, or Organizational Development is essential.
  • Proven experience building organizational structures, teams, systems, and operational processes within a growing organization.
  • Demonstrated success in managing budgets, operational KPIs, cross-functional teams, and business performance.
  • Strong expertise in workforce planning, talent management, compensation strategy, and organizational change management.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience within fintech, financial services, technology, or another highly regulated industry.
  • Knowledge of Ghana’s regulatory environment, including data protection, anti-money laundering (AML), and financial services compliance.
  • Experience managing hybrid or distributed teams.
  • Exposure to board-level reporting, executive leadership, and investor engagement.
  • Experience implementing HR technology, operational systems, and data-driven decision-making processes.

Within the first 12 months, the successful candidate will:

  • Establish a clear and efficient organizational structure and operating framework.
  • Improve key operational and people performance metrics, including employee retention, recruitment efficiency, service delivery, and operational productivity.
  • Develop a stronger leadership team with clear succession plans.
  • Enable the Managing Director to focus on strategic growth by ensuring operational excellence across the organization.
