Job Summary

The Deputy Registrar (Counselling) will provide strategic leadership for the University’s counselling services by promoting the mental health, emotional well-being, and personal development of students and staff. The successful candidate will oversee counselling programmes, strengthen student welfare initiatives, ensure compliance with professional counselling standards, and contribute to the development of policies that foster a supportive and inclusive university environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide individual and group counselling services to students and staff on personal, academic, social, and career-related matters.
  • Design, implement, and evaluate counselling programmes, workshops, and mental health awareness initiatives across the University.
  • Maintain confidential counselling records in accordance with professional ethics, data protection requirements, and University policies.
  • Identify students and staff requiring crisis intervention and coordinate referrals to appropriate external mental health and social support services.
  • Collaborate with academic departments, student leadership, health services, and other stakeholders to enhance student welfare and success.
  • Contribute to the development, implementation, and periodic review of student welfare, counselling, and mental health policies.
  • Prepare and submit periodic reports on counselling activities, programme outcomes, and service delivery to the Registrar or designated authority.
  • Participate in orientation and induction programmes to educate new students about available counselling and support services.
  • Liaise with the Ghana Psychology Council and other relevant professional bodies to ensure compliance with ethical and professional standards.
  • Provide strategic guidance on counselling services and student support initiatives to University Management.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the Head of the Counselling Unit, the Registrar, the Vice-Chancellor, or the University Council.

Qualifications & Experience

Applicants must satisfy one of the following requirements:

  • Have been appointed as a Deputy Registrar or Director (Counselling) in an accredited university or comparable institution and served for at least two (2) years at that rank; or
  • Hold an M.Phil. or a two-year research Master’s degree in Guidance and Counselling, Psychology, or a related discipline.
  • Possess a good first degree together with a Professional Certificate in Counselling or Psychology from a recognized professional body.
  • Have served satisfactorily as a Senior Assistant Registrar (Counselling) and completed the minimum four (4)-year waiting period required for promotion to the rank of Deputy Registrar, with the requisite promotion credentials.
  • Have previously held an appointment at the same or an equivalent grade in a comparable institution and possess at least eleven (11) years of accumulated postgraduate professional experience.
  • Be registered with the Ghana Psychology Council.
