Job Summary
The Lead, Data Engineer will provide strategic and technical leadership in designing, developing, and managing enterprise-scale data platforms that support analytics, artificial intelligence, machine learning, regulatory reporting, and business decision-making. The successful candidate will lead high-performing engineering teams, establish best practices, and deliver scalable, secure, and resilient data solutions across the Group.

Key Responsibilities
Strategic Responsibilities
- Define and execute the enterprise data engineering and platform roadmap in alignment with the Group’s data strategy and business priorities.
- Design and oversee modern data architectures, including Lakehouse and data warehouse solutions.
- Lead the development of scalable enterprise data products and reusable data assets.
- Establish data engineering standards, governance frameworks, and best practices for data ingestion, modelling, processing, and delivery.
- Drive the adoption of advanced analytics, AI/ML capabilities, and real-time data solutions.
- Partner with business leaders, affiliates, and technology teams to deliver scalable data solutions that create business value.
- Strengthen data governance, privacy, security, and regulatory compliance across enterprise platforms.
- Build, mentor, and develop a high-performing data engineering team while promoting continuous learning and innovation.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and continuously enhance the Group’s data architecture and platform capabilities.
Operational Responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and deployment of scalable batch and real-time data pipelines supporting business intelligence, analytics, and machine learning.
- Develop and optimize ETL/ELT solutions using Databricks, Apache Spark, SQL, Python, and Microsoft Azure data services.
- Create and maintain high-quality data models, semantic layers, and business-ready datasets.
- Translate business requirements into practical, scalable technical solutions using agile delivery methodologies.
- Manage the daily performance, availability, and reliability of enterprise data platforms.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimize data pipelines to ensure operational efficiency and service reliability.
- Implement data quality controls, validation processes, metadata management, and integrity checks across enterprise data assets.
- Develop CI/CD pipelines, version control practices, and release management processes for data engineering solutions.
- Collaborate with Data Science teams to support model development, deployment, and production environments.
- Oversee backup, disaster recovery, and business continuity processes for critical data platforms.
- Coordinate engineering activities across distributed teams and affiliate environments while ensuring service level agreement (SLA) compliance.
Qualification Required & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Minimum of seven (7) years’ progressive experience in data engineering, data platform development, or a related field, including at least three (3) years in a leadership role.
- Proven experience designing, implementing, and managing enterprise-scale data platforms, preferably within financial services or other highly regulated industries.
- Strong hands-on expertise in Databricks, Apache Spark, SQL, Python, Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse Analytics, and Data Lake architectures.
- Deep understanding of ETL/ELT processes, streaming architectures, API integrations, data modelling, relational databases, and NoSQL technologies.
- Experience working with big data platforms and distributed data processing environments.
- Strong knowledge of data governance, metadata management, data lineage, data security, and regulatory compliance.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, presentation, and leadership skills.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational, and project management capabilities.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while delivering high-quality solutions within agreed timelines.
Additional Advantage
- Master’s degree in Analytics, Business Administration, or a related discipline.
- Professional certifications in Microsoft Azure, Data Engineering, Cloud Architecture, or related technologies.
- Experience working in pan-African or multi-country environments.
- Ability to communicate in English and French or another African language.
