Role Overview
The Mine Captain provides leadership and oversight for underground mining operations, ensuring safe, efficient, and compliant production activities. This role coordinates teams, manages resources, and drives adherence to operational plans and safety standards within the underground environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and supervise underground mining operations to achieve production targets safely and efficiently.
- Ensure strict compliance with Duty of Care Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations (L.I. 2182), and Mining Inspection Act & Regulations.
- Coordinate daily underground activities including drilling, blasting, hauling, ground support, and development.
- Collaborate with mine planning, survey, ventilation, and geotechnical teams to optimize operations.
- Monitor underground conditions, including rock mechanics and ventilation, to ensure safe working environments.
- Review and implement mine plans, schedules, and operational strategies.
- Conduct inspections, audits, and risk assessments to maintain high safety and operational standards.
- Lead, coach, and mentor supervisors and crews to build a high-performing and safety-driven team.
- Prepare and present operational reports, performance metrics, and improvement initiatives.
- Ensure effective communication across shifts and departments to maintain continuity of operations.
Qualifications and Experience
- Bachelor of Science degree in Mining Engineering or a related field from a recognized institution.
- Minimum of eight (8) years of experience in underground mining, with at least five (5) years in a supervisory role (Shift Supervisor or Mine Foreman level).
- Statutory certification from the Minerals Commission Inspectorate Division as an Underground Mine Foreman.
- Strong working knowledge of underground rock mechanics, mine planning, survey, and ventilation principles.
- Thorough understanding of underground mining operations and demonstrated strong safety performance.
- Solid knowledge of Duty of Care Standards, Occupational Health & Safety Regulations (L.I. 2182), and Mining Inspection Act & Regulations.
- Strong computer literacy, including advanced proficiency in Excel, MS Project, and PowerPoint.
- Valid driver’s license with defensive driving skills and the ability to operate vehicles underground.
