Position Summary

The Cargo Manager will lead, develop, and coordinate all aspects of the airline’s cargo operations. The successful candidate will ensure operational efficiency, regulatory compliance, safety, and security across the cargo network while identifying commercial opportunities that support the organization’s growth strategy.


Key Responsibilities

The Cargo Manager will:

  • Lead and manage all cargo operations across the airline’s network.

  • Develop and implement strategic plans for the Cargo Operations Division aligned with the organization’s overall strategy.

  • Ensure the safety, security, and regulatory compliance of all cargo operations.

  • Identify and develop commercial opportunities through strong customer engagement and relationship management.

  • Coordinate cargo operations across all stations through AWA representatives and/or General Sales Agents (GSAs) and Ground Handling Agents (GHAs).

  • Appoint and manage General Sales Agents at designated stations where necessary.

  • Ensure cargo consignments are protected from unlawful interference while under the airline’s custody and are escorted by authorized security personnel to aircraft.

  • Ensure cargo and mail are accepted only from regulated or approved entities and comply with packaging, labeling, and documentation requirements.

  • Assess and manage cargo claims, including evaluation and resolution.

  • Maintain compliance with company policies, airport regulations, and governmental requirements, with emphasis on safety, security, and operational control.

  • Develop and maintain operational standards and procedures for cargo operations.

  • Ensure staff and ground handling agents remain knowledgeable about company standards, procedures, and regulatory requirements.

  • Implement and oversee initial and recurrent training programs for cargo personnel and subcontractors.

  • Conduct root cause analyses and implement corrective actions following internal and external audit findings.

  • Monitor the performance of Cargo Supervisors and ensure duties are executed effectively.

  • Lead accident investigations related to cargo operations and ensure accurate reporting and statistical analysis.

  • Implement review and risk assessment processes for Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to identify unsafe practices and improve operational quality.

  • Liaise with station managers, airport authorities, and internal departments to resolve operational challenges effectively.


Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • First Degree in Marketing or a related field.

  • Minimum of three (3) years post-qualification experience.

  • IATA/FIATA Certificate in Cargo Handling with at least five (5) years relevant work experience in cargo operations.

  • Valid certifications in:

    • Dangerous Goods

    • Air side Safety

    • Safety Management Systems

    • Human Factors

    • Security Risk and Crisis Management

    • Emergency Planning and Response

    • Quality Management Systems


Competencies (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)

The ideal candidate will demonstrate:

  • Strong knowledge of cargo operations management within the aviation industry.

  • Basic knowledge of International Air Transport Association (IATA) resolutions, procedures, and regulations related to air cargo acceptance and transportation.

  • Excellent leadership and team management abilities.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.

  • Flexibility and the ability to perform effectively under pressure.

  • Ability to work odd hours while maintaining accuracy and efficiency.

  • Proficiency in computer applications relevant to cargo operations.

  • Excellent communication skills with strong command of written and spoken English.
