Position Summary
The Credit Officer will be responsible for originating and managing loan portfolios, assessing credit applications, monitoring loan performance, and ensuring timely loan repayments. The successful candidate will play a key role in growing the institution’s loan portfolio while maintaining high credit quality and supporting overall business objectives.
Key Responsibilities
Business Development & Loan Portfolio Growth
- Identify, solicit, and manage new loan accounts and financial products to achieve assigned business targets.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with prospective and existing clients.
- Identify new business opportunities and actively promote the institution’s products and services.
- Support initiatives aimed at expanding the customer base and increasing portfolio growth.
Credit Assessment & Loan Processing
- Conduct pre-screening, orientation, and registration of loan applicants.
- Guide applicants through the loan application process and ensure all required documentation is completed accurately.
- Process loan applications and ensure loans are correctly captured in the system.
- Verify that applicants comply with all credit policies, procedures, and documentation requirements.
- Conduct credit investigations, background checks, and due diligence assessments.
- Evaluate applicants’ cash flow, repayment capacity, and overall creditworthiness.
- Ensure loan documentation is complete and accurate before submission for appraisal and approval.
Portfolio Monitoring & Recovery Management
- Monitor loan accounts to ensure timely repayment and portfolio quality.
- Follow up promptly on overdue accounts and initiate recovery actions where necessary.
- Escalate delinquent accounts to management in accordance with established procedures.
- Recommend appropriate remedial measures for delinquent borrowers.
- Maintain regular contact with borrowers to encourage repayment compliance and strengthen customer relationships.
- Work proactively to achieve high repayment rates and minimize portfolio-at-risk levels.
Reporting & Performance Management
- Prepare and submit comprehensive monthly portfolio performance reports.
- Provide daily updates to management on business development activities, loan disbursements, collections, and target achievement.
- Monitor individual performance against assigned targets and implement strategies to improve results.
- Maintain accurate records of client interactions, loan activities, and recovery efforts.
Compliance & Risk Management
- Ensure adherence to credit policies, procedures, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain high standards of ethical conduct, confidentiality, and professionalism.
- Support internal audit and compliance reviews when required.
- Contribute to the continuous improvement of credit administration processes and risk management practices.
Qualifications & Experience
Educational Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree or Higher National Diploma (HND) in:
- Finance
- Banking
- Accounting
- Economics
- Business Administration
- Or a related discipline from a recognized institution
Experience
- Previous experience in credit administration, loan processing, sales, business development, microfinance, banking, or a related financial services role will be an advantage.
- Proven experience in customer relationship management and portfolio management is desirable.
- Demonstrated ability to meet performance targets and manage loan portfolios effectively.
