The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) is West Africa’s leading examining body responsible for developing and administering standardized examinations, awarding internationally recognized certificates, and promoting excellence in educational assessment across its member countries.

Established in 1952, WAEC was created through the collaboration of the governments of Ghana (then Gold Coast), Nigeria, Sierra Leone, and The Gambia to harmonize educational assessment standards within the region. Liberia became the fifth member country in 1974, further strengthening the Council’s regional mandate.

The Ghana National Office, located in Ridge, Accra, plays a central role in conducting national and international examinations, issuing certificates, providing examination-related services, and supporting educational development in Ghana.

Today, WAEC continues to uphold the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, innovation, and accountability while embracing digital transformation to improve examination administration and service delivery.
