Position Summary

UNICEF Ghana is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented National Intern: Communications (Media Relations) to support the Advocacy and Communication team in strengthening media engagement, content development, media monitoring, and administrative coordination.

The intern will contribute to the organization’s communication efforts by supporting media relations activities, assisting in content creation, tracking media coverage, and ensuring effective documentation of communication outputs under close supervision.

This role offers hands-on experience in a dynamic international development environment while building practical skills in media relations and strategic communication.

Key Responsibilities

Media Relations Support

  • Support the maintenance and updating of media contact lists and databases.
  • Assist in outreach to journalists, bloggers, and media organizations.
  • Support the organization of press briefings, media interviews, and press events.
  • Assist in responding to media inquiries under supervision.
  • Contribute to strengthening relationships with media stakeholders.

Content Development

  • Assist in drafting and editing communication materials, including:
    • Press releases
    • Media advisories
    • Social media content linked to media campaigns
    • Event summaries and human-interest stories
  • Support the preparation and packaging of content for media dissemination.

Media Monitoring

  • Track and monitor daily media coverage related to UNICEF and its thematic priorities.
  • Compile print, online, and broadcast media clippings.
  • Assist in preparing daily and weekly media monitoring reports.
  • Summarize key media trends and coverage insights.

Administrative Support

  • Assist in organizing communication files, documentation, and media archives.
  • Provide logistical support during communication events and media engagements.
  • Support coordination between internal teams and external partners when required.

Expected Deliverables

  • Draft contributions to communication materials (press releases, advisories, and related content).
  • Regular media monitoring reports and summaries.
  • Updated and well-maintained media contact database.
  • Documentation of media events, engagements, and communication activities supported.

Supervision and Reporting

The intern will work under the supervision of the Chief of Advocacy and Communication and will collaborate closely with members of the Advocacy and Communication team.

Eligibility Requirements

Education

  • Proof of enrolment in an undergraduate or advanced degree programme, confirmed by an official letter from the institution, OR
  • A recent graduate (within the last two years) with an up-to-date transcript or certificate of completion.
  • Academic background in Communications, Journalism, Media Studies, Public Relations, or a related discipline.

Additional Requirements

  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Fluency in English is required.
  • Knowledge of another UN official language (Arabic, Chinese, French, Russian, or Spanish) is an asset.
  • Applicants must not have immediate relatives (parent, sibling) working in UNICEF.
  • Applicants must not report to a relative within UNICEF.

  • Interns are not considered UNICEF staff members and do not hold employment status.

  • Interns do not replace regular staff positions.
  • Interns maintain confidentiality and do not share information externally without authorization.
